DUSTCELL on Their Past, Present, and Future

The Japanese duo talks about their latest songs, their biggest concert yet that is set for next month, and the “mysterious” quality they love about music.

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “DUSTCELL is ___” or “DUSTCELL"s music is ___”?

“DUSTCELL is ___.” This blank state, which could potentially change to anything in the future, feels the most natural.

DUSTCELLの音楽をまだ聴いたことがない人のために、DUSTCELLをどのように説明 します か?「DUSTCELLは___です」または「DUSTCELLの音楽は___です」という 文章で締めてく ださい。

「DUSTCELLは___です」この空欄の状態 (今後何にも変わりうる可能性を持った状態) が 一番 しっくりくるように感じます。

Did you consider any other group names first?

We don't remember exactly, but we think there were almost [no other names considered]. We decided on “DUSTCELL” pretty quickly and intuitively.

「DUSTCELL」というユニット名の他に候補はありましたか?

あんまり覚えてないのですが、ほぼ無かったと思います。割と直感ですぐに 「DUSTCELL」 に 決まりました。

Please describe your newest singles!

“In The End” was written as an image song for Yomi from the [role-playing video game] Houkai: Star Rail. It contains the message that “looking at death enriches life.”

“Heart” was created with the “ONE” solo live show at The Nippon Budokan in mind, which will be our largest-scale [show] to date, to be held in March. This is the first time we've included a chorus part in a song, and we're looking forward to singing it together on the day of the live show.

最新シングル「畢竟」「心臓」について説明してください!

「畢竟」は、RPG『崩壊:スターレイル』黄泉イメージソングとして書き下ろしました。「死を見つ め ることで生が充実する」というメッセージを込めました。「心臓」 は、これまででもっとも大きい規模 となる3月開催の日本武道館でのワンマンライブ「ONE」を想定して制作しました。初めて合唱 パートを楽曲に入れたのですが、ライブ 当日に 皆で歌えることを楽しみにしています。

You’ve been a group for over five years now. Congratulations! How has DUSTCELL changed since 2019, and what are some of your favorite memories from the past five years?

Both of us have grown and changed for the better. Our favorite memory is when we announced our live performance at The Nippon Budokan and heard the most amazing cheers from the fans.

DUSTCELLは結成5年以上のグループです。おめでとうございます!2019年から DUSTCELLはどのように変化しましたか? また、この5年間のお気に入りの思い出 は何で す か?

それぞれに成長を遂げて、良い方向へ変化していったなと思います。一番の思い出 は、 日本 武道館ライブ発表の際、ファンの方々からこれ以上ないほどの歓声を聴いた 瞬間で す。

What is your typical process for making songs? How much of that process is done together versus individually?

There are times when Misumi will create an entire song first and EMA will put lyrics on top of the track, [but] sometimes EMA will add tracks to her lyrics. We don't go into a recording studio; we complete our songs completely at home.

曲作りをする際の普段のプロセスについて教えてください。また、そのプロセ スの中で、 メン バー全員で取り組む部分と、それぞれ個人で行う部分はどれくらいの割合になりま すか?

Misumiが1曲まるごと制作するパターンがまずあって、トラックありきでEMA がその上に リ リックを載せたり、EMAのリリックにトラックをつけることも あります。また、レコーディン グスタジ オには入らず完全にそれぞれの自宅で 楽曲を完成させています。

How much are you involved in coming up with ideas for DUSTCELL"s music videos?

We exchange ideas with video creators to find a match for our music, and then we ask them to create a video. Sometimes we offer ideas for character designs and worldviews, but we generally trust them and let them freely create.

DUSTCELLのミュージックビデオのアイデア出しにはどれくらい関わっています か?

お互いに楽曲に合う映像クリエイターの方のアイデアを出し合って依頼してい ます。キャラ ク ター造形や世界観のアイデアを出すこともありますが、基本的には 信頼し自由に曲を汲み 取って制作していただいています。

Misumi, you have mentioned K-pop music as being a source of inspiration. What specifically about K-pop songs inspires you?

Misumi: I feel a sense of newness and innovation in the sounds, vocals, music videos, fashion, and how they evolve at an incredible speed in response to the entire music scene.

Misumiさん、あなたはK-pop音楽がインスピレーションの源だと言っていましたが、K- popの 曲 のどんなところに特にインスピレーションを感じますか?

What was your initial reaction when you first heard about a novel inspired by DUSTCELL's music?

We were moved when the lyrics we wrote became a big story. It would be a great pleasure if our music could be a source of inspiration for other creators.

自分のつくった歌詞が大きな物語になった時は感動がありました。自分の音楽が他の クリ エイ ターのインスピレーションの元になることがあるならそれは大変喜ばしいこ とです。

Do you remember how you felt when the “DUSTROOM” fan club first launched? How would you describe the relationship between you and your fans?
As this was our first fan club, we were happy to have more opportunities to interact with our fans. It was also fun to think about how we could make the fans who joined the fan club happy with the fan-club-only content. It's very difficult to describe our relationship with our fans in one word, but we have a positive influence on each other. We especially feel this when we meet our fans face-to-face at live shows. They are indispensable to us, and we are always grateful.

「DUSTROOM」が初めて発足したときの気持ちを覚えていますか? DUSTCELLとファンとの関係をどう表現しますか?

初めてのファンクラブ設立だったので、よりファンの方々と交流できる場が増えて嬉し かっ たで す。ファンクラブ限定のコンテンツにて、どうしたらファンクラブに入って くれたファンの 方々を喜 ばせられるのか、考えるのも楽しかったです。ファンとの関 係については、一言で 表すのがとて も難しいのですが、お互いに良い影響を与えてく れる存在なのかな、と思って います。ライブで ファンの方々と実際に顔を合わせる時、特に感じます。私たちにとっては無 くてはな らない存 在で、常日頃感謝しています。

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

We don't really have any career goals in mind, but we want to keep moving in a positive direction.

あなたの短期的および長期的なキャリア目標は何ですか?

キャリア目標はあまり考えていません、が良き方向に常に進んでいきたいです。

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourselves or your music?

Music is something invisible, but it has the mysterious power to change people, and we like that quality. We want to keep making music for the rest of our lives.

最後に、あなた自身や音楽について何か言いたいことはありますか?

音楽は目に見えないが、人に変化を与える力を持つ不思議なもので、そうい う性質 がある ところが好きです。生涯音楽はつくり続けていきたいと思っ ています。
