YOUHA on the Meaning of love you more,
Underrated artist YOUHA opens up about the story her debut EP tells and where her story goes from here!
For those who have never heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “YOUHA is ___” or “YOUHA’s music is ___”?
My music is a magic spell. Once you hear my songs, you keep listening to them.
YOUHA is a “Love-Writer.” I always write about all kinds of love, from falling in love to breakups.
YOUHA’s music has a unique scent. For example, “ISLAND” is like a warm summer smell, “zzz” is the smell of a cozy blanket with a puppy sleeping next to me, and “Last Dance” is a deep rose scent.
Did you always want to be a musician, and if not, what other careers did you consider?
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a Korean medicine doctor. I once wanted to be a pilot as well. However, because I grew up listening to various kinds of music, I naturally grew up to be a singer.
Please describe your new EP, love you more,.
As a “Love-Writer,” I wanted to share my past relationship experience with the fans through music. It is a love story [told] from falling in love to breaking up. [The relationship] was a heartbreaking and miserable experience, but at the same time, it was the most pure and beautiful relationship I had. I wanted to share those feelings with the listeners.
Is there a specific meaning behind ending your album title with a comma?
This is a letter to my ex-boyfriend. You can insert a name from your past relationship at the end of the title to finish it.
Please share some information about each song on love you more,.
“Satellite” has a unique style from my previous releases, which made the process [of making it] so much fun and joyful. “Last Dance” took me the longest time to finish. I had to write the lyrics more than thirty times to find the perfect words for the song. “Flower Rain” is one of my favorites from the album. “We” is a very lyrical song into which I projected my own experiences and feelings a lot. “NUMB” is the most recent song that I worked on, and it was [my] first time trying a rock-based sound, which was so much fun.
Do you have a preference between working on an EP and a single?
A single is much easier to work on; [there is] less pressure than [when] working on [an] album. However, there was a huge, satisfying feeling when I released the EP. It is my first EP, and I’m so happy that fans love all the tracks from the album.
How do you approach writing songs for other artists differently from writing songs for yourself?
When I write for other artists, I always consider their characteristics. There is a process where I study the artist and try to make a song which can reflect their character as much as possible. For my own songs, I write what I like with a story that I want to tell.
Does love you more, represent growth to you? How have you changed as a musician since releasing your debut single several years ago?
When I released [my] debut single, everything was so new, immature, and unfamiliar. I still think about if I’m doing right or not every moment. Nothing has changed since, really.
Do you plan to continue releasing music in the same style as love you more, or will future releases have a totally different sound?
Still thinking about it. Whatever sound it will be, I promise it will be great.
If you could ask anyone in the music industry for advice, who would you ask, and why?
I had a slump last year while working on this album, so I asked for some advice from Mr. Koo, a mixer at Studio KLANG. It [was] an unforgettable moment for me [to get] his thoughtful and priceless advice.
Is there anything you wish you would have known before starting your professional training as an artist? What advice would you give someone who is just starting their trainee days?
I’m still working on it too, but keep focusing on your dream. Do not focus on how others might look at you, [or] what others might tell you. Trust yourself, keep pursuing, then good results will follow naturally. Good luck to you all. I send you all my support.
What is next for you? What goals and dreams are you currently striving towards?
My goal is to go on a world tour. I would love to meet fans from all around the world and feel their beautiful energy.
Lastly, do you have a message for your fans or anything else you want to say about your music?
Thank you for all your support and love for my very first EP, love you more,. I will try my best to show you not only good music, but good everything, as an all-rounder. Please keep on supporting YOUHA. Thank you!
