woo!ah! on Favorite Songs, Fans, and the Future
woo!ah!’s new single, “Catch the Stars,” solidifies their status as young icons! I asked them about this new song and the rest of their very fun discography!
Please introduce yourselves and share what special skills or charms each member adds to the group!
NANA: Hello! I’m NANA of woo!ah!. My charm is my leadership and charisma, as the leader of woo!ah! and as a K-pop artist. On the other hand, I often hear that my personality doesn’t match my looks. I think that gap makes woo!ah! and me more charming!
WOOYEON: Hello! I’m WOOYEON of woo!ah!. I think it’s quite charming when I smile with my eyes. And my positive, sometimes goofy personality adds color to the team.
SORA: Hi! I’m SORA. My strongest charming point is my own lovely vibe.
LUCY: Hello! I’m LUCY. I’m the energizer of woo!ah! who spreads happiness. And my dimples are charming too!
MINSEO: Hi! I’m MINSEO. My special talent is singing. And I have a calm, mellow personality.
For those who have never heard your music before, how would you describe woo!ah! to them? How do you finish the sentence, “woo!ah! is ____”?
NANA: I would like to say, “woo!ah! is a group you’ll continue to wonder [about].” During our past promotions, we have tried to show different music, concepts, and performances. I want to keep on trying [new things].
WOOYEON: woo!ah! has its own strong, unique character. We try various styles of music, and our strongest point is powerful performance skills. I’d like to say, “woo!ah! is a group you cannot fall out of love with once you fall in love.”
SORA: “woo!ah! is colorful!” Each member has a different color, personality, look, skill. So this might dazzle you!
LUCY: “The more you see us, the more you like us!” Every member has a marked individuality. And we always try our best.
MINSEO: I’d like to say, “woo!ah! is woo!ah!” When we present a stage with our unique song and performance, I want people to know that it’s woo!ah! at first sight.
What does the band name “woo!ah!” mean to you?
NANA: It’s a precious word for me. Under this name, our dearest members all gather together. It brings us power to spread our dreams to the world and to keep trying our best to show our uniqueness.
WOOYEON: First of all, “woo!ah!” implies an exclamation. We want to impress people so they can say “Woo! Ah!” As for the meaning of the name, it motivates us to try something unexpected and to surprise everybody.
SORA: Confidence! To be the source of wonder to all, you must be very confident!
LUCY: It’s so precious and important to me. It’s like my heart.
MINSEO: I’m always thankful for the name, and it makes me motivated to try even harder.
What is your new single, “Catch the Stars,” about?
NANA: It’s a hopeful, “K-Highteen” kind of song. It sings about reaching various goals in a dreamy, fantastic way.
WOOYEON: The title song “Catch the Stars” is a pop song with a strong disco drum sound and an impressive, funky guitar and bass. woo!ah!'s energetic and colorful tone stands out in this song. The lyrics might seem abstract, but that makes it more magical. I think it has a hopeful and special vibe where we talk to our fans about a secret story that nobody else knows.
SORA: In my opinion, it’s the brightest, most refreshing song among our songs.
LUCY: It contains our hope to illuminate the world with our energy. It also has our unique “Highteen” sensibility.
MINSEO: It’s a song about the shiny wish to brighten the world with the special light of woo!ah!, like the beautiful light that shines bright through the darkness.
Do you have a special memory or “TMI” story from filming the “Catch the Stars” music video or from recording the song?
NANA: I had to act like I was floating about space wearing a spacesuit. I was hung on a wire, and it hurt more than I thought. I was terrified at the beginning. It was hard to [handle being] in midair. Well, now I’m happy that [the fandom] wow!s love our music video!
WOOYEON: I remember that we never stopped laughing. We were all tired, but it was fun at the same time. It was quite cold, and we managed to shoot even harder [than usual] as a team. I especially love the school field scene. The weather was perfect; beautiful sunlight made the video even prettier. It made all of us so happy!
SORA: There’s a scene where I take Polaroid pictures. I really did take them! We all took a lot of Polaroids.
LUCY: I have so many TMIs I want to share. To pick one, I got to ride a bike with a cat in the basket. But the cat kept on moving, so we had to [do several takes]. It was so cute, and I couldn’t stop smiling. The director liked that smile, so it got in the music video!
MINSEO: We had so much fun recording and shooting the music video. One thing that I remember is that it was so cold during the night dance scene, so members [of woo!ah!] and all the staff members had a hard time fighting the cold.
What is your personal favorite woo!ah! song, and why?
NANA: “Bad Girl.” It was definitely a challenge for us, something we didn’t try before. I remember practicing very hard for “Bad Girl,” as it was an unusual song.
WOOYEON: I love every song of ours. It’s really difficult to pick just one song! For now, I personally like “Payday.” Its lyrics and melody are so pretty to hear. And it’s the first song that we practiced together as woo!ah!. Whenever I listen to “Payday,” it reminds me of that time.
SORA: My favorite is our new track, “Catch the Stars”! I personally like this genre, and it makes me so happy and joyful when I sing [it].
LUCY: I love all of our songs! To choose one song, I’d like to pick the title track of our second single album, “Bad Girl.” It’s very catchy and addictive. I love its powerful, confident lyrics and the point dance moves!
MINSEO: For now, I like “Catch the Stars” the most. I love it because wow!s love it so much, and that makes me very happy. And it feels like it heralds the beginning of 2022!
How has woo!ah! changed and grown since releasing Exclamation?
NANA: I think we got more professional. Every time we monitor our stages, we realize our mistakes and weak points. So, to overcome this, we practice even harder. Little by little, we made progress through practicing.
WOOYEON: First, I think we don’t get as nervous as we used to on stage. Second, I want to do better every day. We got to experience several things, and that makes us think more. I think we still have a lot [of] progress [to make], so we’ll keep on trying our best!
SORA: I think our mindset got enhanced, and it was a little bit hard to express my mind freely in front of cameras when we made our debut. Now, I am accustomed to it and can speak up!
LUCY: I think we grew a lot in terms of skills. It often bums me out when I see some shortcoming on stage. We practice a lot so that we don’t regret it later.
MINSEO: I got a lot more confident in front of a camera. And we all got little tips [for video shoots], such as face angles and the correct way to express [our] thoughts.
Since you debuted in 2020, it has been challenging to do live events. How have you kept in touch with fans despite the pandemic?
NANA: Fortunately, we manage to keep in touch with our fans via Weverse and SNS channels.
WOOYEON: We usually use our Twitter and Instagram to connect with our fans. Especially since mid-2021, we actively use Weverse to communicate with our worldwide fans. And we steadily post YouTube and TikTok content too!
SORA: We did online video call fan meetings! We got to do our first offline fan signing event last year, and I was very happy that day. We use Weverse to talk with our fans daily.
LUCY: We did video call fan signing events to talk to wow!s face to face. Usually, we use Fan Café and Weverse to share our daily lives.
MINSEO: We use Weverse the most to communicate with wow!s. Additionally, we stream on V Live and post video content for our fans. We really hope to meet our fans in person ASAP.
I loved your cover of “Gimme Chocolate!!” by BABYMETAL! Do you hope to release more covers like that? Are there any particular songs you want to cover in the future?
NANA: I want to try various genres. Recently, I saw a cool “Tutting” video, so I’ve been practicing it since.
WOOYEON: I want to perform a soft, delicate dance. I want to sing an acoustic song while playing guitar, too.
SORA: Thank you! We try to do different covers as often as possible. Hope you look forward to it.
LUCY: Anything our wow!s want! We can cover them one by one.
MINSEO: I want to sing a cover song! Something different than the last cover.
Do you have any New Year’s resolutions, either for the success of woo!ah! or personal resolutions?
NANA: For woo!ah!, I hope everyone stays healthy and positive, so people can be happy with us. Personally, I wish I could grow up more mentally and physically.
WOOYEON: I hope our members don’t get hurt and stay healthy in 2022! I hope we continue our promotions happily, and I hope more people can get to know us! Also, I want to meet wow!s in person, and perform too. It’s my first year of my twenties. I hope it will be meaningful. I hope for the best for my family and fans.
SORA: Please, I really want to meet wow!s in person! And I want to travel abroad so we can meet our international wow!s.
LUCY: I wish woo!ah! good health and [hope we get] more recognition.
MINSEO: I hope for the best for woo!ah! and hope we can make more happy memories together. Personally, I wish I could try harder for my own growth! Hwaiting!
Lastly, what message do you have for your fans as we enter a new year?
NANA: Happy New Year! I wish for a great new year full of love and happiness. And I hope you can always stay with us! I want you to know that you’re the motivation of my day. Always, thank you and love you!
