For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “Beverly is ___” or “Beverly’s music is ___”?

あなたの音楽をまだ聴いたことのない人に対して、どのように説明しますか？「ビバリーは___です」または「ビバリーの音楽は___です」という文章をどう締めくくりますか？

“Beverly's music is powerful and touching pop. Originally from the Philippines, Beverly made her debut in Japan eight years ago. She is known as a singer who touches the hearts of her listeners through her music and has a distinctive high tone.”

ビバリーの音楽はポップで、力強く、心に響きます。 フィリピン出身で、８年前に日本でデビューをしました。音楽を通じて聴いた人の心に触れ、ハイトーンが特徴的な歌手として知られています。

What are the biggest sources of inspiration for your music?

あなたの音楽の最大のインスピレーション源は何ですか?

My first source of inspiration is my mom, who really believed in and pushed me to sing when I didn’t believe I could make it. I’m really thankful for that. Second, experiences, good and bad, that have made me stronger, [have] helped me write song lyrics and [have] brought out my emotions in live shows.

私の最初のインスピレーションの源は、自分が成功できるとは思っていなかった時、私を信じて歌うよう後押ししてくれた母です。そのことには本当に感謝しています。2つ目は、良い経験も悪い経験も私を強くし、作詞の助けにもなり、ライブでは感情をもたらしてくれました。

How have your music tastes changed over the years?

あなたの音楽の好みは長年にわたってどのように変化しましたか?

I just realized now how much my music tastes changed! I grew up in a big family where every Sunday, the radio was our alarm clock! I listened to a lot of western and OPM (Original Pilipino Music). I loved listening to a wide variety, from divas like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion to songs from Air Supply, Journey, ABBA, [and] Carpenters. I loved to listen to amazing OPM ballads! Singers like Regine Velasquez and Sarah Geronimo were some of my favorites! Then I had a phase during high school when I listened to a lot of rock songs: Paramore, My Chemical Romance, Secondhand Serenade, BOYS LIKE GIRLS… Also, I am a big Disney fan, so there was a phase when I loved listening to classics: “Reflection” from Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Camp Rock, Hannah Montana, High School Musical - I still do! Right now, I listen to mostly J-pop songs and western music, with a little bit of K-pop and, of course, OPM!

音楽の好みの変化は最近実感しています。私は大家族で育ち、毎週日曜の朝のラジオが朝の目覚まし時計になっていました。そこで西洋音楽やOPM（オリジナルフィリピン音楽）をたくさん聴きました。ホイットニー・ヒューストンやマライア・キャリー、セリーヌ・ディオンなどのディーバから、エア・サプライやジャーニー、アバ、カーペンターズまで、幅広いジャンルの音楽を聴くのが大好きでした。 OPM には、大好きな素晴らしいバラードがあります。レジーン・ヴェラスケス や サラ・ヘロニモが好きです。その後、ロック ソングをたくさん聴いていた時期もありました。高校時代は、パラモアやマイ・ケミカル・ロマンス、セカンドハンド・セレナーデ、ボーイズ・ライク・ガールズ などを聴いていました。また、私はディズニーの大ファンなので、ムーランの リフレクション、美女と野獣などのディズニーの名曲や、ハイスクール ミュージカルの曲、キャンプ・ロック、ハンナ・モンタナなどのディズニー映画の曲を聴くのが大好きだった時期もありますし今でも大好きです。現在は、主に J-popを聴いています (以前はアニメの曲も聴いていました!)。もちろん、洋楽も聴きますが、K-pop も少し聴きます。もちろん OPM も聴きます!

Can you summarize your career journey so far? What have been some of the biggest game-changing moments?

これまでのキャリアをまとめていただけますか? あなたにとって最も大きな転機となった出来事は何ですか?

I think one of the biggest game-changing moments was when I won [the World Championships of Performing Arts]. It changed my life, helped my self-esteem, and made me realize that I can really pursue music professionally. I used to join a lot of amateur singing contests in the Philippines, from the biggest towns to the farthest provinces. I also joined TV competitions, but without success. I got to go to Japan after winning [the WCOPA] and being a guest on TV shows. That was another game-changing moment, getting to do what I love in a country I always wanted to go to. I’ve released songs and performed in a lot of beautiful places in Japan. I get to share my music with lovely people, here and around the world.

私のキャリアの中で最も大きな転機となったのは、米国で開催されたWCOPAというコンテストでシニア・グランド・チャンピオン・パフォーマー・オブ・ザ・ワールドを受賞したときです。この大会は私の人生を変え、自尊心を高められました。音楽をプロとして追求できると実感させてくれました。このコンテストに参加する前は、フィリピン国内の多くのアマチュア歌唱コンテストにも参加していました。テレビのコンテストにも参加しましたが、それは成功しませんでした。ですがWCOPAで優勝した後は、ゲスト出演や他のギグでテレビに出演するようになりました。これが私が日本に来られた理由の1つでもあると思っているし、私の人生におけるもう一つの転機でした。ずっと行きたかった日本で、好きなことをすることができました。日本で曲を発表し、多くの素晴らしい場所で演奏をしてきました。日本だけでなく世界中の素敵な人々と私の音楽を共有することができました。

How much do you remember your experiences in singing competitions when you were young?

若い頃の歌のコンテストでの経験をどれくらい覚えていますか？

I will never forget my first singing competition. It was just a small competition in my hometown, but I was so nervous. I was a very shy girl growing up, so it took a lot of willpower to even join the contest! I remember how I practiced a lot and memorized my song, but when it was my time to sing, I was so nervous I froze. [Then] I started singing, [and] the first part was okay, but I think it was shaky! My throat was so dry because of nerves, and when I sang the last part, either I forgot the words or I mispronounced them! I don’t really remember that part, because I was so nervous! After that, I left the stage and cried!

初めての歌のコンテストは一生忘れません。地元で行われたコンテストでした。小さなコンテストでしたが、とても緊張しました。私は子供の頃とても内気な女の子だったので、コンテストに参加するだけでもかなりの覚悟が必要でした。たくさん練習して歌を覚えたのを覚えていますが、歌う番になると緊張しすぎて固まってしまいました。序盤の方は大丈夫でしたが、震えていたと思います。緊張で喉が乾いてしまい、最後の方は歌詞を忘れたか、発音を間違えたか…緊張しすぎてそのあたりはあまり覚えていません。その後、ステージを降りて泣きました。

Did anything surprise you when you went to Japan for the first time? How was it similar or different compared to what you thought it would be like?

初めて日本に行ったとき、何か驚いたことはありますか？想像していたのと似ていた点、あるいは違っていた点はありますか？

I had an idea of what Japan looked like because of anime and Japanese dramas, but I was still surprised how clean and safe it is. One particular thing that surprised me was how they respect each other’s personal space and time - how they neatly stand and walk on escalators, how everything is on time… That one was big! The trains are on time, and if it’s going to be late [by] a few minutes, they always announce it and apologize in advance. Also, I’ve always known that Japanese food is delicious, but I didn’t expect it to be so good! Anywhere you go, small restaurants or fine dining, everything is amazing! I also love the fact that they’re very detailed, to make sure it’s not just very delicious but pleasing to the eyes. And the service is always 100!

アニメや日本のドラマのおかげで、日本がどんなところかというイメージや考えは持っていましたが、それでもとても清潔で安全なことに驚きました。特に驚いたのは、お互いの個人的な空間と時間を尊重していることです。エスカレーターでの立ち方や歩き方、すべてが時間通りであることなど。これは大きなポイントです！電車は時間通りで、数分遅れる場合は必ずアナウンスがあり、丁寧に謝罪もしてくれます。あとは食べ物！日本食が美味しいのは前から知っていましたが、こんなに美味しいとは思いませんでした！どこに行っても、小さなレストランでも高級レストランでも、すべてが素晴らしいです！また、おいしいだけでなく、見た目も美しく細心の注意を払っているところも気に入りました。そして、サービスは常に100です！

Did you experience any culture shock when you started training and performing in Japan?

日本でトレーニングやパフォーマンスを始めたとき、カルチャーショックを感じましたか?

I think one of the things I was culture-shocked by is how organized the events are, everything from what time I should arrive at an event to the time of rehearsals. I love that about Japan, because it’s easy to know where, how, and what I should do.

カルチャーショックを受けたことの 1 つは、イベントのスケジューリングです。入り時間やリハーサル時間、とても細かいことまですべてがわかるようになっています。ショーではどこでどのように、何をすべきかが簡単にわかるようになっているので、日本のそういうところはとても素晴らしいと感じました。

How do you decide when to sing in English or Japanese? Do you tend to write or record a song in one language before the other?

英語で歌うか日本語で歌うかはどうやって決めるんですか？ 曲を書いたり録音したりするときは、まずどちらかの言語で始めることが多いですか？

I have both Japanese and English songs. Some of my Japanese songs have English versions and some don’t. It really depends on a song and [is up to me] if it’s going to be in Japanese or English. But because I was mainly singing in Japan when I started, I sing mostly in Japanese, [with songs written by] amazing Japanese musicians and lyricists. When I record a song, if it’s in Japanese, I sing it in Japanese, and my producer and manager help me with the proper pronunciations.

私の曲は日本語と英語の両方があります。日本語の曲には英語バージョンがあるものもあります。日本語になるか英語になるかは、曲と私たち次第です。デビュー当初は日本で歌っていたので、ほとんどが日本語です。素晴らしい日本のミュージシャンや作詞家が書いてくれました。レコーディングでは日本語の曲であれば、プロデューサーやマネージャーが正しい発音を手伝ってくれます。

What was your experience like opening for Ariana Grande? Did you get any advice from her or learn anything from that performance?

アリアナ・グランデのオープニングを務めた経験はいかがでしたか？彼女からアドバイスをもらったり、そのパフォーマンスから何かを学びましたか？

I am a big fan of Ariana Grande, so it was really big for me to open for her. I was nervous but excited and ready to give my best! Before the concert, I got the chance to meet her! She’s the sweetest. When I saw her, I instantly cried! But she comforted me and said, “You’re gonna kill it!” I will never forget those words!

私はアリアナ・グランデの大ファンなので、彼女のコンサートのオープニングアクトを務めることは私にとって本当に大きなことでした。緊張しましたが、ワクワクしてベストを尽くす準備ができていました！コンサートの前に彼女に会う機会をいただけて、彼女を見たとき私はすぐに泣きました（笑）！彼女は私を慰めてくれて、「あなたは最高よ！」と言ってくれました。その言葉は決して忘れません！彼女は最高に優しい人です。

What specific moments make you remember that you’re famous?

自分が有名人であることを思い出す具体的な瞬間は何ですか?

I think it’s when the audience sees me and knows my song, or when they get pumped up right after listening to the intro of my song. It’s also when they go to [more than] one of my live shows, even if it’s far. I’m very thankful and so appreciative of those efforts!

私を認識してくれていたり私の曲を知ってくれていたり、曲のイントロを聞いた直後に盛り上がってくれたときだと思います。また、私のライブに何度も来てくれたり、遠くても応援しに来てくれたときなど。そんなみなさんの気持ちにとても感謝しています！

Do you still get nervous before big performances? How do you handle nerves before a show?

大きなパフォーマンスの前には今でも緊張しますか？ ショーの前の緊張にはどのように対処しますか？

Yes! Big or small, I always feel a hint of nerves. But I think as I have sung in a lot of shows, I have learned how to control my nerves, and once I step on the stage, I just let go and enjoy. What I always do before getting on the stage is take a big breath and lose the tension. It really helps!

緊張します！ 規模の大小にかかわらず、いつも緊張をしています。でも、たくさんのライブで歌ってきたので、緊張をコントロールする方法を学んだと思います。ステージに上がったら、ただ解放されて楽しむだけです。ステージに上がる前にいつもやっているのは、大きく息を吸って緊張をほぐすことです。本当に役に立ちます！

Do you have a personal favorite cover that you’ve done?

これまで手がけたカバーの中で個人的に気に入っているものはありますか？

It’s hard to pick a personal favorite! It may sound like I’m complimenting myself, but I just enjoy recording cover songs! As I mentioned earlier, I grew up listening to western music, so it’s a dream come true to have my own versions of some of each generation’s classic hits.

個人的に一番好きな曲を選ぶのは難しいです！これまで配信したカバー曲をレコーディングするのは楽しかったです。先ほども言ったように、私は洋楽を聴いて育ったので、各世代のクラシックヒット曲のいくつかを自分のバージョンで演奏できるのは夢のようです。

Who is an artist you had a lot of fun collaborating with, and who is an artist you have not collaborated with but think would be a lot of fun to work with?

一緒にコラボレーションしてとても楽しかったアーティストは誰ですか? また、まだコラボレーションしたことはないけれど、一緒に仕事をしたらとても楽しそうだなと思うアーティストは誰ですか?

Collaborating with PANDORA was fun! I got to sing “Be The One” for Kamen Rider Build with them. I was a guest and sang it live just recently. It was also fun collaborating with Okazaki Taiiku! The song shows his humor. We made the [music video] together, and he was so fun, everyone was laughing during takes!

Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s songs. I love their songs and would love to do a collaboration with them! If it’s possible, I would also love to do a collaboration with Ariana Grande! It is a little hard to reach, but it’s free to dream, and as long as I am singing, even if it’s a small possibility, I love to believe that it will happen!

PANDORAとのコラボは楽しかったです！仮面ライダービルドの主題歌「Be The One」を歌わせていただきました。先日もライブでゲストとして参加させていただきました。また岡崎体育さんとのコラボも楽しかったです！彼のユーモアは、私の3枚目のアルバムに入っている「尊い」という曲にも表れています。この曲のMVも一緒に作ったんですが、彼はとても面白くて、テイク中みんな笑っていました！

最近はMrs. GREEN APPLEの曲をよく聴いています。彼らの曲が大好きなので、将来コラボできたらいいなと思っています！もし可能なら、アリアナ・グランデさんともコラボしたいです！手の届かないところにいるかもしれませんが、夢を見るのは自由ですし、歌っている限り、たとえ可能性が小さくても、実現すると信じたいです！

What is one career goal that you have already accomplished and one career goal you are still working towards?

あなたがすでに達成したキャリア目標と、現在も取り組んでいるキャリア目標は何ですか?

I remember my simple dream when I was young was to sing. It didn’t matter what stage, I wanted to have a platform where I could enjoy singing. Right now, I am living that dream plus a lot more; I am in Japan pursuing my career. It has always been a goal for me to sing songs that will make my audience feel the joy I feel when I am onstage. Hearing and seeing my fans’ appreciation means a lot to me.

One career goal I have is to reach more people and introduce them to Beverly’s music. I would love to go to different countries, perform, let them get to know me as a singer and a live performer, and hopefully touch their hearts.

若い頃の私のシンプルな夢は歌うことだったのを覚えています。どんなステージでも構いません。歌うことを楽しめるプラットフォームを持ちたいのです。今、私はその夢とそれ以上の夢を生きています。今は日本でキャリアを追求しています。ステージに立つときに感じる喜びを観客に感じてもらえるような歌うことが私の目標でした。ファンの皆さんが私の作品を評価しているのを聞いたり読んだりすることも、私にとって大きな意味があります。その目標を達成していると感じられるからです。

私の目標の 1 つは、より多くの人々に私の音楽を知ってもらうことです。さまざまな国に行ってパフォーマンスし、歌手として、ライブ パフォーマーとして私を知ってもらい、みなさんの心に触れたいです。

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?

Never stop learning. Never stop believing that you can create more music and can level up. When the time comes when everything feels overwhelming, I hope you pause for a bit, pray, look back at how far you’ve come, and see your worth. Lastly, I’m so proud of myself!

学ぶことを決してやめないこと。もっと音楽を作り、レベルアップできると信じることをやめないこと。すべてが手に負えなくなる時が来たら、少し立ち止まって祈り、これまでどれだけ進んできたかを振り返り、自分の価値を見いだしてほしい。最後に、自分自身をとても誇りに思います！
