Here are my 2023 essays about SEVENTEEN’s music!
“SEVENTEEN and The Truman Show”
“SEVENTEEN’s story shows the benefits of seeing the world as capable of redefining on one’s own terms. Truman’s story emulates the downsides of that: the potential to personalize meanings can be misused to exploit someone. Consider the movie title versus SEVENTEEN’s album title. The movie title itself is a farce: ‘The True Man Show’ is anything but! It means nothing; the character is a substance-less figure, molded into whatever spectators desire. In contrast, SEVENTEEN imbue ‘FML’ with their own meanings…”
“SEVENTEEN’s FML: Album Review”
“This new era mixes the dependable with the surprising, highlighting their vulnerable yet self-assured stance in new ways. In FML, the broad brushstrokes of SEVENTEEN’s artistry remain the same; what changes and expands is the full picture.”
Here are my personal essays about their music’s impact on me:
“SEVENTEEN, Autism, and Me”
“SEVENTEEN’s songs about a kind of understanding that runs deeper than language strike a powerful chord with me. As someone with less on-demand access to communication skills, I value music to an extent that not many understand but that SEVENTEEN do.”
“My Autism Acceptance Month Speech”
“Their ability to convey meaning through everything from their music videos’ color schemes to choreography gave me an ‘A-ha!’ moment: so this is how other people see the world! SEVENTEEN, as well as the work of other K-pop artists, became my ultimate source of escapism. I am usually overwhelmed when multiple senses need to be used at once, but adding music changes the equation… The external world that is usually relentlessly coming for my attention span suddenly stopped existing when I watched a K-pop video. It was a relief and a gift to discover artists like SEVENTEEN, with work so engrossing that my mind had no space left for processing unrelated stressors for the time being.”
