The Stories Behind Tomggg’s Special Songs

Tomggg describes each song on his new album, the surprisingly deep meaning behind the title, recent music tastes, and more! Tomgggがニューアルバムの各曲について解説、タイトルに込められた意外な深い意味、最近の音楽の趣味などについて語ります！

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before? How would you finish the sentence “Tomggg is ___” or “Tomggg’s music is ___”?

あなたの音楽をまだ聴いたことがない人のために、どのように説明しますか?「Tomggg  は ___」または「Tomggg の音楽は ___ です」という文章をどう締めくくりますか?  

“Tomggg is a Japanese music producer who works [with] the theme of fun music. He specializes in cute tones and melodies, bouncy beats, thick bass, and detailed rhythms that give a different impression every time you listen.”

Tomgggは楽しくなる音楽をテーマに活動し、かわいい音色やメロディ、跳ねるビートを得 意とし、太いベースや細かいリズムなど聴くたびに印象が変わる日本の音楽プロデュー サーです。 

Why did you choose to go by the name “Tomggg”?

なぜ「Tomggg」という名前を選んだのですか?

The name is a combination of “Tom” and “ggg.” One day, a classmate called me by the nickname “Tom.” It sounded completely different from my real name, but I liked it, because it was like having a different personality. The “ggg” part comes from the onomatopoeia depicted in Japanese manga. When a character is lifting something heavy or putting a lot of effort into it, it is depicted like “gugguggu.” In other words, “Tom [is] putting his strength into it.” I never thought that the name I used to create my social media account would become [my stage name]. 

Tomgggは[Tom+ggg]という構造なんです。ある日クラスメイトにTomというニックネーム で呼ばれました。本名と全く異なる響きだし、私に理由はわかりませんが、違う人格が出 来たみたいで気に入りました。[ggg]の部分は、日本の漫画で描かれるオノマトペから来て います。登場人物が重いものを持ち上げたり、力を込めたりするときに「ぐぐぐ..」と描 かれます。つまり力を込めているTomがTomgggという名前です。SNSのアカウントをつく るための名前がアーティスト名になるなんて思わなかったです。 

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?  

最初に音楽のキャリアを追求するきっかけとなったのは誰または何ですか?  

There are many reasons why I got started in music, but it was Rei Harakami who got me strongly interested in electronic music. His music is unstable but controlled in every detail, and his use of space is amazing.  

音楽に始めたきっかけはたくさんあるけど、電子音楽に強く興味をもったきっかけはレイ ハラカミさんです。彼の音楽は揺らいでるけど隅々までコントロールされていて、空間の 使い方が素晴らしいです。

What career would you be pursuing today if it could not be music-related?  

音楽関連でなければ、今日追求するキャリアは何ですか?  

I want to be an adventurer.

How has your music changed over time?  

あなたの音楽は時間とともにどのように変化しましたか?  

I have always made music that emphasizes harmonies, because of my experiences playing piano and being in music school. I have always been interested in designing lateral connections and changes between sounds. Recently, I find rhythms that overlap or shift sounds, that sense patterns or betray expectations, interesting. So recently, I have been experimenting with making different beats.  

ピアノを弾いていたり、音楽大学にいた経験からハーモニーを重視する音楽をこれまで 作ってきました。音と音の横のつながりと変化をデザインしていくような音楽です。でも 最近はビートやリズムに興味があります。音が重なったりずれたり、パターンを感じたり 予想を裏切ったりするリズムが面白いと思っています。なので最近はいろんなビートを作 るのを試しています。 

Do you have a specific process for making remixes, and is that process different from making original songs?  

リミックスを作成するための特定のプロセスはありますか?そのプロセスはオリジナル曲 を作ることと異なりますか?  

There is no specific process; I always change my methods. Remixing is like taking a piece of music that is already good and changing the way it is illuminated, like shaping leaves and branches as [a song grows into] a new plant. 

特定のプロセスは無くて、いつもやり方を変えています。たとえ話になりますが、リミッ クスはすでに固定化されている音楽の良い部分に照明の当て方を変えていくような作業だ と思います。オリジナルは植物を育てて、葉っぱや枝が伸びてきたところの形を整えて新 しい植物の形にするような感じ。

Please explain why you named your album superposition.  

アルバムを superposition と名付けた理由を説明してください。  

One day, I was looking at a river near my house and wondered why rivers exist. I looked it up in a book and found that the role of rivers is "transportation, erosion, and sedimentation.” I somehow associated this role of the river with cultural transitions and the pros and cons of streaming services - but I liked the [thought] of sedimentation, the image of my work flowing somewhere and being deposited under [the] ground. The word "superposition" came up in connection with the word “sedimentation.” I think it is an interesting word.  

ある日、家の近くにある川を眺めていた時に「なぜ川は存在しているのだろう」と思いま した。本で調べると川の役割として「運搬・侵食・堆積」というのを挙げているのを見つ けました。この川の役割からなんとなく文化の移り変わりやストリーミングサービスへの 苛立ちや恩恵などを連想したのですが、私は堆積という事象が気に入りました。自分の作 品がどこかに流れていって堆積して、自分や誰かの地面の下にあるイメージ。堆積という言葉と関連して出てきた言葉が”superposition” でした。面白い言葉だと思います。 

Please describe each of the songs on superposition and/or share a fun fact about each one!  

superposition の各曲について説明してください。また、各曲に関する面白い事実を教え  てください。  

“DORAGONIA”: There is a concept that applies an animal to each year of the Chinese zodiac, and 2024 is The Year of the Dragon. I created this music while thinking about the existence of something bigger than human beings. I asked singer Kaho Nakamura to sing this song with more "cuteness" than usual in mind. The song has an atmosphere like the opening song of an anime.  

干支といって1年毎に動物を当てはめる考え方があるのですが、2024年はドラゴンの年な のです。人間よりも大きな存在について考えながらこの音楽を作りました。歌手の中村佳 穂さんが普段より「かわいい」を意識して歌ってもらいました。 架空のアニメソングのオープニングのような雰囲気。

“ICHIGO MIRUKU”: I wanted to make music with a stronger beat than harmony. I think it’s the best [song] I’ve done recently. I usually use a DAW [Digital Audio Workstation] called Logic, but I made the beat with a sampler called Digitakt. The singer ena mori is a Filipina musician, but she also speaks good Japanese, so the song is an interesting mix of Japanese and English.  

ハーモニーではなくビートを強めた音楽を作りたいと思って作った曲。最近では一番上手 くいったと思います。普段はLogicというDAWを使ってるけど、Digitaktというサンプラー でビートを作りました。 歌手のena moriさんはフィリピンのミュージシャンですが、日本語も上手！なので日本語 と英語が混ざって面白い歌。 

“Sweet Romance”: At the time, I was tired of making songs with perfect production, so I decided to create a relaxed atmosphere, by looping the rhythm and playing the guitar. It's like bedroom pop. This is my first collaboration with raychel jay since “Away With Me.” raychel jay always comes up with wonderful melodies. 

当時、他の仕事で完璧なプロダクションによる楽曲を作ることに疲れていました。なので リラックスした雰囲気にしようと思ってリズムをループしながらギターを弾きながら作り ました。ベッドルームポップみたいな感じ。away with me 以来のコラボで、raychel jayはいつも素敵なメロディを考えてくれる。  

“it’s okay!!”: I made this music with the theme of an unresolved floating chord progression and four kicks. I think it's a little darker than I initially envisioned, so I aimed for a hail of synth leads. Merry Lamb Lamb's humorous singing makes this music enjoyable.  

解決しない浮遊感のあるコード進行とキックの4つ打ちをテーマに作った音楽です。最初 思い描いていたものより少しダークな雰囲気になったような気もするので、シンセリード をひょうきんな感じを目指しました。merry lamb lambのユーモアある歌が楽しい音楽だと 思います。 

“Turn The Lights On”: This song also has a bit of a dark atmosphere, but with various rhythms layered on top of each other, I think it has a fun atmosphere [too]. I can't remember how I wrote it, but I like the triple guitar lead. 

この曲も少し暗い雰囲気をまとっているけどいろんなリズムが重なっていて、楽しい雰囲 気があると思います。自分でもどうやって作ったか思い出せないです。３連ぷのギターの リードが気に入っています。 

“Dance on the table”: This is a collaboration with Vtuber and rapper Peanuts-kun. The song was originally created for a children's educational program on Amazon Prime Video in Japan.

Vtuber でもありラッパーでもあるピーナッツくんとのコラボレーションです。もともと日 本のAmazon prime videoで発表された子ども向けの教育番組にむけて作られた楽曲です。 

“ICHIGO MIRUKU (MON/KU Remix)”: When “ICHIGO MILK” was released, a project was conducted to distribute the stems and have them remixed. At that time, MON/KU posted this remix as a demo on Twitter. It’s too cool! It didn't make it [on] the remix EP, but I'm glad to be able to include it at this time. MON/KU is a musician who makes very cool music, so please check it out.  

いちごミルクを2023年にシングルリリースした際に、ステムを配布してリミックスしても らう企画が行いました。その際にMON/KUさんがTwitterにデモとしてポストしていたのが このリミックスでした。かっこよすぎる。リミックス企画としてリミックスEPには間に合 わなかったのですが、今回のタイミングで収録することができて嬉しいです。 MON/KUさんはとってもかっこいい音楽を作るミュージシャンなので是非チェックしてほ しいです。 

Will future albums sound similar to superposition?  

今後のアルバムは superposition に似たサウンドになりますか?  

I think they will be different. I hope the music will be more organic and not too controlled. I am interested in acoustic instruments, improvisation, letting nature take its course, and [what] lies between the dance floor and the daily quiet.  

異なる音楽になると思います。もっと有機的でコントロールされすぎない音楽になると良 いなと思っています。もっとアコースティック楽器が増えたり、即興演奏だったり、自然 に身を任せたり、ダンスフロアと静かな日常の間に横たわる淡いに関心があります。 

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?  

短期的および長期的なキャリア目標は何ですか?  

I can only answer "to make a good album," but I think it would be great if I could make a soundtrack like Kensuke Ushio, while utilizing my own musicality.  

目標と言われると「良いアルバムを作る」としか答えられないけど、例えば牛尾 憲輔さん んみたいに自身の音楽性を活かしつつ、サウンドトラックが作れたらそれも良いなと思っ ています。 

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?  

最後に、あなた自身やあなたの音楽について他に何か言いたいことはありますか?  

Recently, I've been working as a producer, providing tracks and making music with singers. Of course, this is great, but I also want to get back to the mindset I had ten years ago, when I released my work [with] Maltine Records and posted beats and remixes on SoundCloud. I hope I can make interesting music again, even if it might be a little strange. Thank you for your continued support!  

最近はプロデューサーとして楽曲提供を行い、音楽家やシンガーと音楽を作っていく仕事 が増えました（もちろんこれは素晴らしいことです。）。でも10年前Maltine Recordsとい うインターネットレーベルから作品を発表したりsoundcloudでビートやリミック を投稿 していたようなマインドを取り戻したいとも思っています。再び少し変な形をしているか もしれないけど面白い音楽が作れたらいいな、と思っています。いつもサポートありがと うございます！
