For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “SOIN is ___” or “SOIN’s music is ___”?

당신의 음악을 들어보지 않은 사람들에게 어떻게 설명하시겠습니까? "SOIN은 ___이다" 또는 "SOIN의 음악은 ___이다"라는 문장을 어떻게 마무리하시겠습니까?

“SOIN’s music captures delicate emotions that are easily neglected by everyday life.” I hope to bring comfort and warmth through my songs.

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?

처음에 음악 경력을 쌓도록 영감을 준 사람은 누구 또는 무엇이었나요?

When I was in middle school, I loved singing at noraebang [karaoke] to relieve stress. That’s when I fell in love with music purely for what it is, and it led me to pursue music more seriously. As I started learning music more professionally, I studied songwriting and composition, but I was mainly immersed in jazz. I performed and explored jazz music for about five years, from high school through college. That’s why you can often hear elements of jazz in my songs, such as scat singing and improvisational styles.

한국에는 ‘노래방’이라는 문화가 있어요. 중학교 시절, 스트레스를 풀기 위해 노래방에서 노 래 부르는 걸 정말 좋아했어요. 그때 처음으로 음악 자체를 순수하게 사랑하게 되었고, 그 마음이 점점 커지면서 결국 음악을 진지하게 시작하게 되었습니다. 전문적으로 음악을 배우기 시작하면서 작사, 작곡은 물론 다양한 장르를 접했지만, 특히 재즈에 깊이 빠지게 되었어요. 고등학교부터 대학교까지 5년이라는 시간 동안 재즈 음악을 하며 보컬과 즉흥연주(스캣) 등 다양한 음악적 표현을 탐구했어요. 그래서 SOIN의 곡에서는 스캣이나 재즈적인 요소들을 자주 느끼실 수 있을 거예요.

After graduating from university, I began thinking more deeply about my vision for music and started uploading jazz covers and original songs on YouTube. Through that process, I discovered how deeply I loved songwriting [and] creating something entirely from scratch. Expressing my emotions, musical ideas, and messages on a blank canvas felt incredibly rewarding and meaningful. During that time, I performed and collaborated on many band projects, but I gradually felt a strong desire to pursue my identity as a solo artist. That’s when I decided to begin my journey as a singer-songwriter under the name “SOIN.”

대학교 졸업 후, 앞으로의 음악 방향성에 대해 깊이 고민하던 시기에 유튜브를 시작하게 되었고, 꾸준히 재즈 커버와 자작곡을 올리며 사람들과 음악으로 소통했습니다. 그러면서 곡을 직접 작사·작곡하며 아무것도 없는 백지 위에 저만의 사운드와 메시지를 담아내 는 과정에 큰 행복과 보람을 느꼈어요. 또한, 솔로 음악뿐만 아니라 다양한 밴드와 협업하며 무대 경험을 쌓았지만, 어느 순간 ‘이제는 나만의 이야기를 담은 음악을 해야겠다’는 확신이 들었어요. 그렇게 SOIN이라는 이름으로 본격 적인 싱어송라이터 활동을 시작하게 되었습니다.

How has your music changed over the past few years?

지난 몇 년 동안 당신의 음악은 어떻게 바뀌었나요?

My first four singles were parts of my journey to discover my musical identity. I focused on delivering my vocals in a raw and honest way, without excessive embellishments or variations. However, after releasing “orgel,” I gained more confidence in my musical direction and sound. Vocally, I started exploring a freer, more expressive style and practiced using a lighter, more effortless tone. Since then, I’ve been crafting songs that blend R&B with acoustic warmth and a comforting groove, infusing more of my unique color and emotions into my music.

제 첫 번째 싱글 ‘그냥 그냥’, ‘More and More’, ‘give To.’, 그리고 ‘Checklist’까지 총 네 곡은 제 음악 색깔과 보컬 톤을 찾아가는 여정이었던 것 같아요. 이 곡들에서는 보컬의 꾸밈없 이 담백하게 감정을 전달하는 데 집중하며, 바이브레이션을 최소화해 덤덤하게 부르는 연습을 많이 했어요. 특히, ‘orgel’을 발표한 후에는 음악적 방향과 사운드에 대한 확신이 생기면서 보컬적으로도 더 자유로워졌어요. 톤을 가볍게 올리는 연습을 하며 표현의 폭을 넓혔고, 그때부터 R&B 장르에 어 쿠스틱한 감성과 편안한 그루브를 담아 저만의 색깔을 깊이 새긴 곡들을 만들기 시작했습니다.

“STOP”: After releasing my first EP, Sense, I took a break from making music for about two and a half months. As time passed, the pressure and anxiety of releasing my next single kept growing. During that time, the producer Tajo Hwarang sent me the beat for “STOP” and said, “Even if your steps are slow and unsteady, walking at your own pace can be beautiful when you look back.” That message deeply resonated with my situation, and we began working on the track together. “STOP” became a song that comforts those who feel overwhelmed, reminding them that it’s okay to live at their own speeds and okay to pause and rest.

“STOP”: EP 앨범 ‘Sense’를 발매하고 약 2개월 반 동안 음악 작업을 쉬었습니다. 하지만 시간이 지날수록 다음 싱글에 대한 부담과 불안이 커졌습니다. 그때 타조화랑의 프로듀서가 “STOP” 비트를 보내면서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “비록 절뚝거리며 천천히 걸어도, 나중에 돌아봤을 때 나만의 속도와 템포로 걷는 게 아름답지 않을까요?” 이 이야기가 당시 제 상황과 너무 비슷해서 공감이 갔고, 타조화랑과 작업을 시작하게 되었습니다. 그렇게 탄생한 곡 “STOP”은 다른 사람의 기준에 얽매이지 않고 나만의 속도로 살아도 괜찮고, 가끔은 멈춰서 쉬어도 괜찮다는 위로의 노래입니다.

A song from Sense: “Checklist” came from a personal experience. One day, one of my friends told me, “You don’t seem desperate enough for music. Do you know how hard other artists work? You should at least keep a checklist to manage your day.” Hearing that, I felt frustrated, because [that friend] judged me without truly knowing my passion. But that conversation also sparked a realization: “Emotions can’t be checked off like tasks on a list.” Inspired by that thought, I wrote this song, comparing that feeling to a love that can’t simply be erased or completed like a checklist.

“orgel”: I was brainstorming for my next song after give To. when I stumbled upon an old note in my phone. It was a draft of lyrics titled “orgel,” a word I’ve always found beautiful. I had written those lines long ago, captivated by the image the word evoked. In my mind, an orgel has always looked like a small, delicate island inside a clear, glass sphere, spinning gently as the winding key plays a soft, repeating melody. I suddenly thought, “What if I compared love to a music box?” Inspired by that feeling, I set aside my old lyrics and wrote new [ones], in which the clear glass sphere symbolizes the purity and excitement of first love. The tiny island inside the sphere represents the memories built together throughout the changing seasons. And the melody that endlessly repeats as the key turns - an unwavering rhythm that plays on and on - expresses my trust and belief in [a loved one]. It’s a story about two people who once lived separate lives but come together to build memories and grow closer through trust and faith. Their relationship, like a music box, spins in an endless circle, [as they dream] of a love that lasts forever.

“orgel” : ‘give To.’ 싱글 앨범 이후, 새로운 곡을 구상하다가 오래된 메모장을 열었는데, 그 안에 묵혀 있 던 ‘오르골’ 가사가 눈에 띄었어요. ‘오르골’이라는 단어가 참 아름답게 느껴져서, 예전에 핸드폰 메모장에 가사를 적어둔 적이 있었 거든요. 제가 떠올리는 ‘오르골’의 이미지는 투명한 동그란 유리알 안에 자그마한 섬들이 꾸며져 있고, 태엽이 돌아가며 편안한 음악이 반복되는 모습이에요. 그러다 문득, 사랑을 ‘오르골’에 비유한다면 너무 아름답겠다는 생각이 들어, 예전에 썼던 가사를 모두 지우고 새로운 감각에 따라 다시 써 내려갔습니다. ‘투명한 유리알’은 첫사랑의 시작을, 그 안에 꾸며진 ‘작은 섬’들은 계절을 함께하며 쌓아온 추억들을 의미해요. 그리고 ‘태엽이 돌아가며 반복되는 노래’는 그대에 대한 신뢰와 믿음을 담았죠. 인연이 없던 우리가 만나 함께 추억과 계절을 쌓아가며, 서로를 향한 신뢰와 믿음으로 돈독해지는 관계— 어쩌면 이런 사랑이 ‘오르골’처럼 돌고 도는 영원한 사랑이 아닐까요.

“Cause You Are”: This song is very special to me, because it was my first release under my real name, Sohie Son. It was a collaboration project with Collective Arts, and it marked my debut as a singer-songwriter sharing my voice with the world. Through that experience, I learned and grew a lot. I believe those lessons shaped who I am as SOIN today.

“Cause You Are” : 이 곡은 ‘콜렉티브아츠’와 콜라보한 앨범으로, 제 본명 ‘손소희’로 처음 발매한 곡이에요. *‘SOIN’*이라는 예명을 사용하기 전, 싱어송라이터로서 처음 세상에 제 목소리를 들려준 노래였 기 때문에 저에게는 아주 뜻깊고 소중한 도전이었습니다. 그 과정을 통해 많은 것을 배우며 성장했고, 그 경험이 오늘의 ‘SOIN’을 만들었다고 생각해요.

Who do you look up to in the music industry, and why?

음악 산업에서 당신이 존경하는 인물은 누구인가요? 그리고 그 이유는 무엇인가요?

I deeply admire Raveena. When I was working on the arrangements for my Sense EP and “orgel,” I found myself revisiting her music for inspiration. I love her signature dreamlike, ethereal sound. It has a softness and warmth that I truly connect with.

저는 Raveena라는 아티스트를 정말 좋아해요. 특히 ’sense‘ EP와 ‘orgel’ 편곡을 작업할 때, Raveena의 곡들을 많이 영감을 받았어요. 그녀 특유의 ‘꿈결 같은’ 몽환적인 사운드를 정말 좋아해요.

What do you think your biggest strengths and weaknesses are as a musician?

음악가로서 당신의 가장 큰 장점과 단점은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?

My biggest strength is my attention to detail and persistence when creating music. However, that strength can also become my weakness. Because I chase perfection, I sometimes struggle to let go, even when it’s time to move on, pushing myself too hard in the process.

저의 강점은 곡을 만들 때 섬세함과 끈기입니다. 하지만 동시에 그게 약점이 되기도 해요. 완벽을 추구하다 보니, 포기하거나 내려놔야 할 순간에도 계속 매달리며 스스로를 힘들게 만들 때가 많아요.

What songs or artists are you listening to the most these days?

요즘 가장 많이 듣는 노래나 아티스트는 무엇인가요?

Recently, I’ve been listening to Giriboy’s song “You Get Out.” The lyrics are playful and witty, but the music itself feels laid-back and comforting. I love how that contrast creates a refreshing energy. It always lifts my mood and clears my mind.

요즘은 기리보이의 “니가 나가”를 자주 들어요. 이 곡은 가사는 유쾌하지만, 음악 자체는 편안해서 두 요소가 주는 에너지가 듣는 내내 기분을 상 쾌하고 좋게 만들어주더라고요.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

당신의 단기 및 장기 직업 목표는 무엇입니까?

In the short term, my goal is to release my second EP this year and hold a live concert in South Korea. In the long term, I hope my music becomes an oasis for people, a place they can return to for comfort, even if only occasionally. I want to stay by [listeners’] sides for a long time, sharing life’s moments through my songs.

단기적인 목표는 올해 저의 두 번째 EP 앨범을 발매하고, 한국에서 공연을 여는 것입니다. 장기적인 목표는 제 음악이 자주는 아니더라도, 여러분이 가끔 쉬어갈 수 있는 ‘안식처’ 같은 존 재가 되는 거예요. 오랫동안 여러분 곁에 머물며 음악으로 함께하고 싶어요.
