The Leaders of “R-Pop” and “RCM”
The team behind Shonen Shojo explains “Ryukyuan Pop” and “Ryukyu Chill Music.” 少年少女が「琉球ポップ」と「琉球チルミュージック」を通じて琉球文化を広めたい理由と方法を説明します。
Please introduce yourselves and explain what “R-pop” is all about!
自己紹介と「R-pop」について教えてください！
The R-pop unit “Shonen Shojo” is made up of men and women from the Ryukyu Islands. It is a project where Ryukyu artists freely collaborate to create and deliver alternative music from Okinawa, the southern island of Japan. It is nostalgic, comfortable, and gently embraces you, taking listeners of all ages and genders back to when they were “boys and girls.” [“Shonen” refers to content geared towards boys and “Shojo” refers to content geared towards girls.]
琉球男女による R-pop ユニット “少年少女” は、沖縄の琉球アーティストたちが自由にコ ラボレーションして沖縄のオルタナティブミュージック を 生み出して届けるプロジェクトです。聴く人を老若男女問わず “少年少女” だった頃に時代 を巻き戻す、どこか懐かしく心地よい、あなたにそっと寄り添う音楽を日本の南の島「沖縄」 から発信しております。
“R-pop” is a word coined from a group of words that describe the activities of boy and girl artists, including the “R” for “Ryukyu,” “Relaxation,” “Relation,” “R&B,” “Rap,” [and] “Reiwa” [the current era of Japan]. As a hub of the Asian region, Okinawa has a unique culture, wonderful nature, scenery, and a tragic history that is hard to describe. All of these elements that only exist in Okinawa are mixed together [and] have influenced the unique music.
R-pop とは、琉球の「R」、Relaxation の「R」、Relation の「R」、R&B の「R」、Rap の「R」、 令和の「R」etc… 少年少女のアーティスト活動を形容する言葉群から生まれた造語です。 アジア地域の hub として独自の文化、素晴らしい自然・風景・景色、筆舌しがたい悲惨な 歴史など、日本の沖縄にしか存在しない様々な要素が全て混じり合い（これを沖縄方言では 「ちゃんぷるー」と言います。）、独自の音楽に影響を与えていると思います。
What are some things about the Ryukyu Islands that you wish more people knew?
琉球沖縄について、もっと多くの人に知ってほしいことは何ですか？
Since long ago, the Okinawan music scene has produced many popular artists. Recently, “ASIAN STATE OF MIND” [by Okinawan artist] Awich, Jay Park, KR$NA, Masiwei, [and] VannDa [has been] attracting attention around the world. There are many talented artists in Okinawa who have not yet been discovered. The purpose and mission of the “Boys and Girls” project is to let the world know about them.
日本の沖縄音楽シーンは昔から多くの人気アーティストを輩出してきました。ここ最近だ と、Awich。Awich, Jay Park, KR$NA, Masiwei & VannDa - ASIAN STATE OF MIND (Prod. Diego Ave)は今、アジアだけではなく世界中で注目されていると思います。このように沖縄 にはまだ発掘されていない素晴らしい才能を持ったアーティストが多数存在しています。 このようなアーティストを世界中に知らせることが、“少年少女”プロジェクトの目的であり 使命でもあります。
Have there been difficulties making music that does not focus on one specific demographic? What is the key to making music that appeals to a wide range of people?
特定の層に焦点を合わせない音楽を作るのは難しかったですか？ 幅広い層の人にアピールする音楽を作る秘訣は何ですか？
There is a Japanese proverb that says “Onkochishin.” This means “seeking the old to know the new,” meaning that learning about the wisdom and culture of the past leads to new discoveries and creations. [The] “Shonen Shojo” project aims to create music that can reach people of all ages and genders by adding musical elements unique to the current era to the “city-pop” genre that was popular in Japan from the late 1970s to the 1980s.
日本の諺に「温故知新（Onkochishin）」という言葉があります。これは「古きをたずねて新 しきを知る」ということで、つまり、過去の知恵や文化を学ぶことで、新しい発見や創造に つなげるという意味です。少年少女プロジェクトは、1970 年代後半から 1980 年代にかけ て日本で流行した音楽ジャンル“citypop”をベースに、今の時代ならではの音楽要素も加え ることで、老若男女に届くような音楽を目指しています。
What do you think are the project’s biggest strengths and weaknesses?
このプロジェクトの最大の強みと弱みは何だと思いますか?
[What] is both a good and a bad thing [is that the] “Shonen Shojo” project creates and delivers music centered on Okinawa and Ryukyu. This is unique, but on the other hand, it can limit our possibilities. We try to be stubborn [but] not too biased, [and to] strike a balance that fits the current era.
長所でもあり短所でもあるのですが、少年少女プロジェクトは、「沖縄」、「琉球」を軸に音 楽を制作し届けているということです。これはオンリーワンなことなのですが、逆に言うと 可能性を狭めてしまう可能性もあるので、固執し、偏り過ぎずに今の時代にフィットするよ うにバランスを取るように心掛けています。
Please describe one of your newest singles, “two of us”!
シングル「two of us」について教えてください！
In this work, we feature two Ryukyu artists, MaveRick and CELINA, who live in Okinawa. This song, which was arranged by maeshima soshi, features CELINA's gentle yet strong singing voice melting over the beat of a pleasant acoustic guitar, and MaveRick's ennui and deep rap overlap. It is a song that creates a fantastical yet nostalgic worldview.
今作では琉球アーティストとして、沖縄在住の“MaveRick” と “CELINA” の二人をフィー チャリングしました。アレンジャーとして日本で活躍する “maeshima soshi” を迎えた本楽 曲は、心地よいアコースティックギターが響くビートの上に、CELINA の優しくも芯のあ る歌声が溶けみ、MaveRick のアンニュイで味わい深いラップが重なり合います。幻想的で ありながら、どこか懐かしい世界観を生み出す一曲となっております。
What is another song of yours that you want people to hear?
あなたが人々に聞いてほしいもう一つの曲は何ですか？
“Piano Dance” is a song created in collaboration with Okinawa-based pop-rock band What at lazz. They are artists who have released music in various genres, including rock music, chill music like this, and vocaloid music, which has built a unique culture in Japan. Please pay attention to them.
「Piano Dance」は、沖縄在住の Pop Rock band “What at lazz”とのコラボレーションによ り生み出された楽曲です。彼らは、ロックミュージックだけではなく、今作のようなチルミ ュージックや、日本で独自の文化を築いたボーカロイドミュージックなど、様々なジャンル の音楽を発表しているアーティストです。是非注目してみてください。
What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
短期的および長期的なキャリア目標は何ですか？
There are still not many people who know about Shonen Shojo, so [we] would like to deliver our project to [more] people all over the world.
少年少女のことを知っている人はまだまだ少ないと思うので、世界中の人に自分達のプロ ジェクトを届けたいです。
Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourselves or your music?
最後に、自分自身や音楽について他に何か言いたいことはありますか？
The “Shonen Shojo” project not only releases original songs, but also covers classic Japanese songs with “Ryukyu Chill” arrangements, [uploaded on our] YouTube channel with footage of tourist locations in Okinawa.
