For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “MiMi is ___” or “MiMi’s music is ___”?

아직 당신의 음악을 들어보지 못한 분들에게, 자신의 음악을 어떻게 소개해 주시겠습니까? “MiMi는 ___이다” 혹은 “MiMi의 음악은 ___이다”라는 문장의 빈칸을 어떻게 채우시겠습니까?

“MiMi’s music [is] filled with love.” Although I work within the trap-based R&B genre, I write lyrics about love, a theme that stands in beautiful contrast to that musical style. I hope that when people listen to my songs, they find something that truly lingers in their hearts.

미미의 음악은 사랑이라고 채울 것 같습니다. 이유는, 트랩 베이스 R&B 장르를 하고 있지만, 그와 대비되는 사랑에 대한 가사를 쓰고 있기 때문입니다. 제 노래를 듣고 마음에 남는 게 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?

누구 혹은 무엇이 당신에게 음악 커리어를 시작하게 된 첫 영감을 주었나요?

My older sister. Ever since we were young, my sister dreamed of becoming a singer. Watching her constantly dance and sing right in front of me, I began to mimic her, and before I knew it, I had developed a dream of becoming a singer myself.

제 친언니입니다. 어릴 때부터 언니가 가수의 꿈이 있어서 제 앞에서 맨날 춤추고 노래했어요. 그 모습을 보고 저도 따라 하다 보니 어느새 가수의 꿈을 갖게 되었어요.

How have your music tastes changed over the years and influenced the kind of music you want to make for yourself?

지난 세월 동안 당신의 음악적 취향은 어떻게 변화해 왔으며, 이는 당신이 추구하는 음악의 방향에 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?

I have always had a fondness for mainstream Korean pop music. Consequently, even while pursuing trap/R&B, elements of that K-pop sensibility naturally blend into my work. I really appreciate this fusion, as I feel it allows my own unique artistic identity to shine through. I believe the second verse of my song “Pop Pink Apple” is where this distinct vibe comes through most vividly.

저는 항상 대중적인 가요를 좋아했어요. 그러다 보니 트랩 R&B를 하면서도 가요의 느낌도 섞여 나와서 저만의 느낌이 나오는 것 같아 좋았습니다. Pop Pink Apple의 2절 부분이 그런 느낌이 가장 잘 나왔던 파트인 것 같습니다.

What are some of the proudest moments of your career so far?

지금까지의 음악 활동 중 가장 자랑스러웠던 순간들을 꼽아주신다면요?

I think the moments I feel the proudest are when my family comes to watch my performances.

“Overcome”: “Overcome” wasn’t my official solo debut track, but it was the first song I ever sang entirely on my own after years of group activities. I personally designed the album cover, which remains a fun memory for me.

““Overcome” 은 정식 솔로 데뷔곡은 아니었지만, 그룹 활동을 하다가 처음으로 혼자 노래를 부르게 됐던 곡이었습니다. 앨범 커버 작업은 제가 직접 해서 재밌었던 기억이 있습니다.

“Sweetdreams, My Dear”: “Sweetdreams, My Dear” was released three years after “Overcome,” and it served as my official solo debut single. After getting married, my husband and I established MOOVE LABEL together. I participated in the production of the track and poured my own honest personal story into my music for the very first time. The reason I chose a pop ballad for my official debut was that I felt it was the most suitable genre to act as a bridge, connecting my past as an idol with my future as an artist, before eventually transitioning to trap/R&B, a style that aligns much more closely with my actual personality. I felt it was the perfect way to begin sharing my own narrative. That’s why I hid photos from my childhood in the music video, incorporating a few “Easter eggs” of my own. The lyrics honestly capture the thoughts and worries that were frequently on my mind during that period. In this way, “Sweet dreams, My Dear” became my cherished first work, the project that marked the beginning of me revealing my true self to the world with greater honesty.

“Sweetdreams, My Dear” 은 overcome 이후 3년 만에 나온 곡인데요, 제 정식 솔로 데뷔 싱글이었습니다. 결혼한 후에 남편과 무브레이블 (MOOVE LABEL)을 설립하고, 곡 프로듀싱에도 참여하며, 처음으로 제 진솔한 이야기를 담았던 것 같습니다. 팝 발라드 장르인데요. 처음 정식 데뷔를 발라드 장르로 잡은 이유는, 제 실제 성격과 가장 유사한 트랩 R&B로 가기 전, 아이돌과 아티스트의 경계를 이어주는 통로 역할을 하기에 가장 적합하다고 생각이 들었던 장르였고, 또 제 이야기를 시작하기 가장 좋다고 생각되었기 때문입니다. 그래서 뮤직비디오에는 제 어릴 적 사진을 숨겨놓기도 하며, 나름 이스터에그를 넣어보기도 했습니다. 가사에는 제가 그 당시 평소에 자주 했던 말들이나, 자주 하던 걱정 등을 진솔하게 담았습니다. 이렇게 Sweetdreams, My dear은 저를 조금 더 솔직하게 보여드리기 시작한 저의 소중한 첫 작품이 되어 주었습니다.

“Like You Love Me”: Since I’ve always loved Christmas carols, I wanted to release one of my own. While I certainly enjoy upbeat carols, I wanted to maintain a stylistic continuity with my previous singles. Drawing inspiration from Sia’s “Snowman,” I decided to release a song that, while not strictly upbeat and bright, offers a sense of warm comfort through its lyrics. As for the music video, I was deeply inspired by the heartwarming vibe of Ariana Grande [and Justin Bieber’s] “Stuck with U,” specifically the way [they] incorporated footage of fans. I thought to myself, “I’d love to create a music video that features many people joining in as well.” I created an homage to “Stuck with U,” incorporating video submissions sent in by the public. Thanks to the participation of so many people, I felt truly grateful to see such a beautiful music video come to life. Among those submissions were clips from my beloved family members, friends, and senior colleagues in the industry — videos that I still occasionally watch.

평소 캐럴송을 좋아하기에, 저도 캐럴을 내보고 싶었고 이 곡은 그렇게 출발하게 되었습니다. 신나는 캐럴송도 너무 좋지만 앞선 싱글과의 유사성을 주기 위해 Sia의 Snowman에서 영감을 받고, 마냥 밝지만은 않지만 따듯한 위로의 말을 담은 곡을 내게 되었습니다. 그리고 뮤직비디오는 Ariana Grande의 Stuck with U에서 팬들과 함께한 영상의 느낌이 너무 좋았고, 저도 많은 사람들과 함께한 뮤직비디오가 있으면 좋겠다는 생각에 Stuck with U를 오마주 하여 사람들의 참여 영상을 받아 제작하게 되었고, 많은 분들의 참여 덕에 너무 예쁜 뮤직비디오가 탄생한 것 같아 감사했습니다. 그 중에는 제가 사랑하는 저의 아빠, 가족, 친구, 그리고 선배님들의 영상도 있어 지금도 가끔 혼자 뮤직비디오를 돌려보곤 합니다.

“Pop Pink Apple”: “Pop Pink Apple” marks a turning point in my career. It serves as a pre-release single for my mini-album, designed to clearly showcase my distinct artistic identity not merely as “MiMi the idol,” but as “MiMi the artist.” I took on the role of creative director for both the music itself and the accompanying video, allowing me to pour a great deal of my vision into every detail.

“Pop Pink Apple” 은 저의 전환점이 된 곡입니다. 미미라는 아이돌이 아닌 아티스트로서의 색을 정확하게 보여드리기 위한 미니앨범의 선공개 싱글입니다. 이번 곡은 음악뿐만 아니라 뮤직비디오에서도 크리에이티브 디렉터로 참여하며 많은 것을 담았습니다.

The lyrics for “Pop Pink Apple” were inspired by the biblical [poem] “Song of Solomon” (aka “Song of Songs”), as well as by [the concept of] “Fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.” The lyrics feature the line “I only need to know love. I don’t need to know good and evil,” and this sentiment [is] the core theme running through the song. I took the apple — a symbol of the fruit that grants the knowledge of good and evil — and gave it a slight twist, reimagining it as a “Pop Pink Apple” that grants the knowledge of love. If you watch the music video, you’ll notice that an apple keeps following me around. I repeatedly turn away from it and try to put it back in its place. However, the video concludes with a scene where I finally accept it with a smile, ending with the distinct sound of me taking a bite. What I love most about the project, however, [is] the title itself: the fact that “Pop Pink Apple” remains a title unlike any other.

What are the biggest lessons being in a girl group taught you, about music or just life in general?

걸그룹 활동을 통해 음악적으로나 혹은 인생 전반에 걸쳐 배운 가장 큰 교훈은 무엇인가요?

I’ve come to realize that when we try to live our lives strictly according to the expectations and standards of others, we risk losing touch with our true selves. I have learned that above all else, I must always live by my own thoughts and standards, staying true to who I am.

남들의 시선과 기준에 맞춰 살아가다 보면 자신을 잃어버리게 되는 것 같습니다. 항상 자신의 생각과 기준에 맞춰, 나답게 살아야 가야 한다는 걸 배웠습니다.

Do you ever miss being in a girl group? What were the biggest pros and cons of being in one?

걸그룹 활동 시절이 그리울 때가 있나요? 걸그룹 멤버로서 활동할 때의 가장 큰 장점과 단점은 무엇이었나요?

To be honest, I think I’m naturally better suited for group activities than for a solo career. Since I tend to get quite nervous when I’m on my own, I feel much more at ease when I can share the stage with others. I think the greatest advantage is the sense of reassurance and support we feel during those moments. As for downsides, I don’t really think there are any.

저는 사실 솔로보다는 그룹 체질인 것 같습니다. 혼자서는 많이 긴장하는 성격이다 보니, 파트를 나눠서 함께 무대에 오를 때의 든든함이 가장 큰 장점인 것 같습니다. 단점은 딱히 없는 것 같습니다.

What is the story behind the moment you and Thunder officially decided to become CATtRIEVER?

당신과 천둥(Thunder) 님이 정식으로 ‘CATtRIEVER’를 결성하기로 결정했던 순간에 얽힌 이야기가 궁금합니다.

At first, because there [is] a lot of talk that an idol’s career is over once they get married, I created this idol duo out of sheer defiance. However, as we continued writing songs, I remember shifting our direction. Rather than simply trying to be “idols,” I wanted to demonstrate that idols can continue to create wonderful music even after becoming a married couple.

처음엔 아이돌은 결혼하면 끝이라는 이야기가 많아서 오기로 부부 아이돌을 만들었었습니다. 하지만 곡을 써가면서는 아이돌이려고 한 것보다는, 아이돌이 부부가 되어서도 여전히 멋진 음악을 해나갈 수 있다는 걸 보여주고 싶어, 방향을 수정했던 기억이 있습니다.

Has being in a musical duo led you to seeing Thunder in a new way? How has working together on music affected your relationship?

음악 듀오로 활동하면서 천둥 님을 새롭게 바라보게 된 계기가 있었나요? 함께 음악 작업을 하는 과정이 두 분의 관계에 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?

My husband is usually very playful and shows a lot of cute sides to his personality, but when he’s working on music, he becomes incredibly serious, and I find that so cool. In particular, the lyrics he writes always deeply move my heart. Working on music together has allowed us to understand each other’s innermost thoughts even better, and I truly feel [like] we are growing together not just as artists, but as a married couple as well.

오빠는 평소에는 장난끼도 많고 귀여운 모습이 많은데, 음악을 할 때만큼은 정말 진지한 모습이 너무 멋있어요. 특히 오빠가 쓰는 가사는 항상 제 마음을 울컥하게 만들고요. 같이 음악 작업을 하면서 서로의 속 깊은 마음들도 더 많이 알게 됐고, 부부로서도 함께 성장하고 있다는 걸 많이 느끼고 있어요

Do you purposefully try to make solo music that differs from CATtRIEVER’s music?

솔로 음악을 작업할 때, 의도적으로 CATtRIEVER의 음악과는 차별화된 색깔을 보여주려 노력하시나요?

Actually — and this is something only the two of us know — the entire concept behind CATtRIEVER’s music [is] centered around our wedding. “Sunflower” represents our wedding invitations, “Ordinary days” is the wedding ceremony itself, and “Drive” is our honeymoon. That’s why every single track is so lovely. Though it wasn’t entirely intentional, our music ended up having a vibe that differs from our solo work. However — I’m revealing this for the very first time [also] — CATtRIEVER is planning to disband. We intend to make a comeback under the name “Thunder & Mimi,” presenting music that lies at the intersection of our individual musical styles, moving beyond the wedding-centric concept. We look forward to showing you a fantastic new side of ourselves. Please look forward to “Thunder & Mimi”!

사실 CATtRIEVER의 음악의 출발은, 우리 부부만 아는 거지만, 전부 결혼식 콘셉트였어요. Sunflower는 청첩장, Ordinary days는 결혼식, drive는 신혼여행이에요. 그래서 모든 트랙이 사랑스럽죠. 그렇다 보니 의도하지 않았지만 솔로 음악과 다른 느낌을 갖고 있었죠. 하지만 처음 얘기하는 거지만 CATtRIEVER는 해체 예정입니다. 천둥 & 미미라는 이름으로 결혼식 콘셉트가 아닌 천둥과 미미의 음악의 교집합에 있는 음악으로 컴백해서 멋진 모습 보여드리려고 합니다. 천둥 & 미미도 많이 기대해 주세요.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

당신의 단기 및 장기적인 활동 목표는 무엇인가요?

In the short term, my goal is to keep sharing my music until everyone gets accustomed to this new side of MiMi. In the long term, I would love to go on a world tour.

단기적으로는 미미의 새로운 모습에 익숙해질 때까지 제 음악을 들려드리는 거고요, 장기적으로는 월드 투어를 해보고 싶어요.
