自己紹介と、メンバーそれぞれがグループにどのような特徴やスキルを貢献しているか教えてください！
We are What at lazz, a band based in Okinawa, Japan.
日本の沖縄県を中心に活動しているWhat at lazzと申します。
Vocalist Kyoka has experience performing on stage and as a solo artist, and her powerful voice leads the band. She also writes the lyrics, helping to create [our] worldview.
Vo.杏果は舞台やソロ活動の経験をもち、パワフルな歌声でバンドを牽引しています。作詞も担当し、ワトラズの世界観を作り上げています。
Guitarist Kou’s boundless cheerfulness and communication skills create a great atmosphere in the band. He also composes the music, allowing us to expand our musical horizons.
Gt.こうは底抜けの明るさとコミュニケーション能力でバンドの雰囲気をとっても良くして くれています。また作曲も担当し、楽曲展開を幅広くすることができております。
Bassist Masshi, with his outstanding bass skills and analytical abilities, serves as the band’s hidden brain. Our bass seminars attract promising bassists from Okinawa.
Ba.まっしーはずば抜けたベーススキルと分析能力で、バンドの隠れたブレインとして活躍 しています。ベースセミナーを開くと沖縄県の将来有望なベーシストたちが集まってきま す。
Drummer Takuya is the leader [and] main composer. He is responsible for over 90 percent of [our] music. He is constantly formulating strategies for the band’s overall activities.
Dr.たっくんはリーダーで、メイン作曲家兼ドラマーです。ワトラズ楽曲は9割以上たっくん が担当しています。バンド活動全体の戦略立てを常に行っております。
For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “What at lazz is ___” or “What at lazz’s music is ___”?
あなたの音楽をまだ知らない人に、どのように説明しますか？「Iazz で___って何？」または「Iazz の音楽で___って何？」という文章をどう締めくくりますか？
“What at lazz is a pop and rock band. They have a wide range of songs, from easy-to-understand pop songs to emotional Japanese rock.”
What at lazzはポップでロックなバンドです。わかりやすいポップな楽曲もあれば、エモい邦楽ロックもあり、幅広く楽曲展開しています。
What is the story behind how you first became a band?
バンドを結成した経緯を教えてください。
The band was formed in 2018 by leader Takuya and the previous guitarist. Among the bands and artists [we] had played with up until then, Kyoka and Masshi had made the strongest impressions, so they were invited to join. Guitarist Kou joined about three years ago. He was also an old acquaintance, and [we] had been fascinated by his guitar-playing, so [we] invited him to join.
リーダーのたっくんと以前のギタリストを中心に2018年に結成されました。 それまで対バンしたことのあったバンドやアーティストの中で、とっても印象がよかった 杏果、まっしーをメンバーに誘い結成しました。Gt.こうは約3年前に加入しました。 彼も以前からの知り合いで、ギタープレイには惚れ惚れしていたので誘いました。
How did you choose your band name, and did you consider any other band names first?
バンド名はどのようにして決めましたか？最初に他のバンド名を検討したことはありますか？
Our first band name was “CHEVALIERs,” which means “knights” in French. We decided on “What at lazz” because [“CHEVALIERs”] was a little difficult to read, and because [“What at lazz”] could be abbreviated and unique.
最初のバンド名は「CHEVALIERs」でした。フランス語で「騎士」という意味です。 少し読みづらいという理由から、「What at lazz」というバンド名にしました。 バンド名が略せること、他と被らないこと、
Who do you look up to in the music industry, and why?
音楽業界で尊敬している人はいますか？その理由も教えてください。
[We] respect LiSA and Tokyo Incidents. [We’re] very impressed by LiSA’s overwhelming performances and her demeanor as a rock heroine, [and we] also love [her] songs. Tokyo Incidents are exemplary, with fantastic performance and technical abilities. [We’re] also impressed by Sheena Ringo’s seductive demeanor.
「LiSA」や「東京事変」を尊敬しています。「LiSA」は圧倒的なパフォーマンス、ロックヒロインとしての立ち振る舞いにとても感銘 を受けています。楽曲も大好きです。「東京事変」は素晴らしい演奏力・技術力、バンドとしてのお手本的な存在です。 椎名林檎さんの妖艶な立ち振る舞いにも感銘を受けています。

それぞれの曲について語ってください！
“Sky”: [We] made this song to encourage the dreams of those who listen to it. The message it conveys is that anyone can spread their wings, fly into the sky, and chase dreams to the end.
「Sky」: 聴いている人の夢を後押しできるような楽曲にしました。どんな人でも空に羽ばたいていける、君なら夢をどこまでも追いかけていけるというメッセージを込めました。
“Harunisaku”: This song has been getting a lot of listens on social media since its release. It’s always ranked at the top of [our] subscription services. [We] didn’t expect it to get so many listens, and [we’re] very happy. This song was created together with “Iwasenaiwa” [collaborator] DELIVA. DELIVA is an excellent singer and wrote the harmony parts for us.
「春に咲く」: この曲はリリース後SNSでたくさん聴かれるようになりました。ワトラズのサブスクでは常にトップに入っている楽曲です。ここまでたくさん聴いてもらえるとは思っていなくて、嬉しい限りです。“Iwasenaiwa”インフルエンサーのDELIVAさんと一緒に作成した楽曲です。DELIVAさんは歌唱がとても上手で、ハモリパートはDELIVAさんに作ってもらいました。
“One”: This song features Okinawan influencer Magoroku. We’ve known Magoroku for a long time and always wanted to do something together, so we’re glad it finally came to fruition.
「One」: こちらも沖縄のインフルエンサー孫六さんにフィーチャリング参加してもらいました。 孫六さんとは昔からの知り合いで、何か一緒にできたらよいなと思っていたので、実現して よかったです。
“DOLL?”: This is an older song, but it’s one that we have a lot of attachment to. We remember feeling a real sense of accomplishment when composing it, and we still often perform it live.
「DOLL?」: こちらはすこし前の楽曲ですが、僕たちにとっても思い入れのある曲です。 作曲したときに確かな手ごたえを感じたのを覚えています。今でもライブではよくやったりします。
Any other song you want to talk about: We recently released a song called “fafafafoundation,” which was composed by guitarist Kou. It’s a very cute pop song, unlike anything we’ve done before. Kou wrote it hoping that it would be the theme song for the anime Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo suru.
他に話したい曲はありますか？: 最近リリースした「ふぁふぁふぁふぁんでーしょん」という楽曲があるのですが、Gt.こう が作曲を担当している楽曲です。これまでには無かった、かなりポップでキュートな楽曲になっています。 「その着せ替え人形は恋をする」というアニメの主題歌になったらいいなと思い作ったそう です。
What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
あなたの短期的および長期的なキャリア目標は何ですか？
Our short-term goal is to perform a sold-out solo concert on the third floor of Music Town Oto Ichiba in Okinawa City. In the long term, we’d like to be able to make a living for ourselves, as well as all the staff involved, solely through our [music career]. Specifically, we’d like to become a band that can regularly tour Zepp [a group of music venues throughout Japan].
短期的な目標は沖縄県沖縄市にあるミュージックタウン音市場3Fでワンマンライブを行 い、ソールドアウトさせてたいです。長期的にはワトラズの活動だけでメンバー4人、また関係者スタッフがご飯を食べられるよ うになりたいです。具体的にはZeppツアーを定期的に回れるようなバンドになりたいです。
Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourselves or your music?
最後に、ご自身や音楽について何か伝えたいことはありますか？
We hope that people will listen to, enjoy, get excited by, be moved by, and generally have their emotions touched by our music. We will continue to work hard so that we can continue to release music like that. Thank you for your continued support!
