MC Sniper Talks “Love Burnout,” His Proudest Career Moment, and More
MC Sniper opens up about who he is both on and off the mic.
For those who have never heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence, “MC Sniper is___”?
I am a loving father of two boys, a caring husband, a microphone checker, [and] a musician who sings [about] life.
How did you choose the name MC Sniper?
I want to strike my audiences’ hearts with my messages, just like a sniper with his rifle and rounds of bullets. I know it sounds a bit corny, but I've been keeping it real over the last two decades.
What is your new song, “Love Burnout,” about?
Even when in love, the power struggle is real. It's often hard to tell which side is more dedicated. "Love Burnout" sings the problems we face every day, living both as top dogs and underdogs.
If you had to turn “Love Burnout” into a collaboration, which singer or rapper would be perfect for it?
Lee Young Ji is the first musician I can think of. Exchanging verses that speak for each side’s perspective would make this song more dynamic and interesting.
What are some other things you are passionate about besides music?
I have tons of fun running a YouTube channel, and I study filmmaking. There are so many things I want to create.
If you could go back in time, what would you say to a younger version of yourself who was still trying to start a music career?
Make sure to take some time off to reward yourself. It will take you far in your music career. Relax and think about the long term.
Is there a specific memory you have of the moment when you felt like your dream of being a musician was coming true?
Rocking the mic on the underground stages was a way of proving myself, and it made me feel alive. No teachers, no mentors to guide me through it. I was not polished, but I was brave. The day my first album came out, I covered myself with a blanket and cried my heart out.
What life experiences have shaped your music or changed your music career the most?
I was contacted by [composer, singer, and producer] Ryuichi Sakamoto while working on my third album. We worked on a track together, and it forever changed my perspective and direction.
What are your future plans regarding your music career? What is next for you?
I am working on a new album that I plan to release this year. I can't tell exactly when, due to the pandemic, but I want to throw concerts and do busking [this year too].
Lastly, is there anything else you would like to say about your new song or your music in general?
Covid-19 is wack. No doubt. But please hang in there and live positively. We can't change our surroundings, but we can change the way we look at things. I will return soon with new tracks. Be safe and stay blessed!
