“Blue Letter” is quite literally a blue letter. Here, “blue” doesn’t just mean sadness or melancholy; it’s more like a record of emotions I sent to myself and a journey of rediscovering the true color I had forgotten. The “letter” in this song is like a small encouragement addressed to my past self, or to the part of me that feels a little shaken right now. It’s not something to just let pass by, but a gentle whisper saying, “It’s okay, you can start again. The sparkle of that color is still within you.” In a way, this song feels like the process of learning to love myself again.

‘Blue Letter’는 말 그대로 푸른 편지예요. 여기서의 ‘blue’는 단순히 슬픔이나 우울을 뜻하는 색이 라기보다는, 나 자신에게 보내는 감정의 기록이자, 잊고 지냈던 진짜 나의 색을 다시 찾아가는 여 정을 의미해요. 이 노래 속 ‘편지’는 과거의 나, 혹은 지금 조금 흔들리고 있는 나에게 건네는 작 은 응원 같은 거예요. 그냥 흘려보내는 게 아니라, “괜찮아, 다시 시작할 수 있어, 아직 내 안에 반 짝이던 그 색이 남아 있어.” 이렇게 조용히 말 걸어주는 마음이 담겨 있어요. 이 노래는 어쩌면 나를 다시 사랑하게 되는 과정, 혹은 나에게 보내는 작은 응원 같다고 생각해요.

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?

음악 경력을 쌓도록 처음 영감을 준 사람이나 사물은 무엇인가요?

I’ve never strayed from my dream of becoming a singer. From childhood, I practiced with cassette tapes, danced along to singers on TV, and drew inspiration from BoA. In high school, I joined a dance team, won contests, and became known for singing and rapping, later attending a music academy despite my parents’ concerns. I kept recording demos and sending them to producers, which led to my first official feature on JA and Zion’s 2011 album Breath. I then entered the hip-hop scene, learned songwriting and composing, and debuted in 2013 with Jaram Project. After the group disbanded, I continued independently, releasing my own music. Now, in my twelfth year since debuting, I remain committed to being an independent artist, finding unmatched fulfillment in creating music entirely on my own.

저는 가수가 되겠다는 꿈을 단 한 번도 흔들린 적이 없었어요. 어린 시절부터 테이프에 맞춰 노 래하고 TV 속 가수를 따라 춤추며 연습했고, 보아에게 큰 영감을 받았죠. 고등학교에서는 댄스팀 활동과 대회 수상, 노래와 랩으로 주목받았고, 부모님의 반대에도 음악학원에 다녔어요. 데모를 만들고 제작자들에게 보내던 중 2011년 JA와 Zion의 앨범 Breath에 피처링하며 처음으로 공식적 으로 목소리를 남겼습니다. 이후 힙합 씬에서 활동하며 작사·작곡을 익히고, 2013년 ‘자람 프로젝 트’로 데뷔했지만 해체 후 홀로 음악을 이어갔습니다. 올해 데뷔 12주년을 맞은 지금도 독립 아티 스트로서 내 힘으로 앨범을 완성하는 성취감 때문에 독립적인 길을 걷고 있습니다.

How have your music tastes changed over time and influenced the kind of music you want to make for yourself?

시간이 지남에 따라 음악 취향이 어떻게 바뀌었고, 자신이 만들고 싶은 음악 스타일에 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?

I always try to find the style of music that best fits the story I want to tell. That’s why I’ve worked on songs across many genres, from rock to acoustic to ballads. I don’t limit myself to any specific genre. I love all kinds of music. You could say my mindset is simply, “If it’s good music, that’s enough.” If I had to pick a favorite genre these days, I would say band music [or] R&B.

저는 언제나 제가 하고 싶은 이야기에 가장 잘 어울리는 음악 스타일을 찾으려고 해요. 그래서 락, 어쿠스틱, 발라드 등 다양한 장르의 곡들을 작업해왔습니다. 특정 장르에 국한되지 않고 모든 음악을 좋아해요. “좋은 음악이라면 그걸로 충분하다”는 마음이랄까요. 굳이 요즘 즐겨 듣는 음악 을 꼽자면, 밴드 사운드와 R&B를 말할 수 있을 것 같아요.

What career would you be pursuing today if it could not be music-related?

음악과 관련되지 않았다면 오늘날 어떤 직업을 추구하고 있나요?

I’ve never really considered a life outside of music, but if I had the chance, I’d love to work in something related to space. I’m really fascinated by space, and it would be amazing to join NASA someday. Oh! I’m also interested in the esports industry, because I love gaming. In particular, I’m a big fan of T1, the League of Legends esports team.

저는 음악 외의 삶을 깊게 생각해본 적은 없지만, 기회가 주어진다면 우주와 관련된 일을 해보고 싶어요. 우주를 정말 좋아해서, 언젠가 나사에 들어갈 수 있다면 정말 멋질 것 같아요. 아! 그리고 이스포츠 산업에도 관심이 있어요. 게임을 매우 좋아하거든요. 특히 리그 오브 레전드 팀 T1의 팬 입니다.

How do you pick cover artwork for your music, and is there any particular reason why you often feature animated images?

곡의 커버 아트워크는 어떻게 선택하시나요? 커버에 애니메이션 이미지를 자주 사용하는 특별한 이유가 있나요?

I prefer illustrations or 3D artwork over photographs because they better capture the image and [feelings] I imagine. When creating a song, I usually first visualize the album artwork in my mind and then explain it to the artist. They always do an amazing job bringing my visions to life. I believe the artwork is the most important part of an album, because listeners see it and get their first impressions before hearing the music. That’s why I don’t mind investing a lot in artwork; it represents the very first impression of my music.

저는 사진보다는 그림이나 3D 일러스트를 더 선호하는데, 그 이유는 제가 상상하는 앨범의 이미 지와 느낌을 구현하기에 더 좋기 때문이에요. 곡을 만들 때는 보통 먼저 머릿속으로 앨범 아트워 크를 구상하고, 그 생각을 작가님께 설명드리는 편이에요. 작가님들은 항상 제 생각을 멋지게 실 물로 구현해주시죠. 저는 아트워크가 앨범에서 가장 중요하다고 생각해요. 음악을 듣기 전에 아트 워크를 보고 첫인상을 받게 되기 때문에, 아트워크에는 돈을 많이 써도 아깝지 않아요. 아트워크 는 제 음악의 첫인상이니까요.

What do you do to get unstuck when you can’t think of ideas for a song?

노래에 대한 아이디어가 떠오르지 않을 때 어떻게 하면 막혔던 상황에서 벗어날 수 있나요?

I try to read books and watch movies as much as possible. Since I write lyrics based on my own experiences and current thoughts, it’s often difficult to write songs when I feel peaceful. At those times, I turn to books, movies, dramas, or even anime to experience a variety of emotions.

저는 책이나 영화를 많이 보려고 노력해요. 저는 제가 직접 겪은 일이나 현재 하고 있는 생각을 바탕으로 가사를 쓰기 때문에, 마음이 평화로울 때는 곡을 쓰기 어려운 편이에요. 그럴 때는 책이 나 영화, 드라마, 애니메이션 등을 보면서 다양한 감정을 느껴보려고 합니다.

Is there anything you miss about being in a musical group?

뮤지션 그룹 활동에서 그리운 것이 있나요?

Performing can be stressful at times, because I have to fully lead the stage on my own for a long period. I have to manage everything: the performance atmosphere, my remarks, and the songs. So sometimes I wish there [was] someone by my side to share it with.

공연을 할 때는 무대 전체를 혼자 오래 이끌어야 한다는 부담이 있을 때가 많아요. 공연의 분위 기, 멘트, 노래까지 모든 것을 혼자 감당해야 하기 때문에, 가끔은 옆에 함께할 다른 사람이 있으 면 좋겠다고 생각합니다.

What are some of the proudest moments of your career so far?

지금까지 활동하면서 가장 자랑스러웠던 순간은 무엇인가요?

This year, my song “Ending Credit” was performed as a special stage at the Baeksang Arts Awards, one of Korea’s major art awards ceremonies. I was invited to attend in person, and it was truly an honor. Seeing the perfect narrative of “Ending Credit” unfold exactly as I had imagined it on stage was very moving. When the song was first released, it didn’t receive much attention, which was a bit disheartening, but this Baeksang stage completely filled that void. I felt a strong sense of affirmation that I am on the right path, and it strengthened my determination to return to [that] stage someday, whether as a nominee or as a presenter.

올해, 한국의 큰 예술 시상식인 <백상예술대상>에서 저의 노래 <Ending Credit>이 특별무대로 만 들어졌습니다. 현장에 초대받아 직접 관람할 수 있었는데, 정말 큰 영광이었어요. 특히 제가 상상 했던 <Ending Credit>의 완벽한 서사가 무대 위에서 그대로 펼쳐지는 것을 보면서 감동했죠. 사 실 곡을 처음 발매했을 때 큰 반응이 없어서 속상하기도 했는데, 이번 백상예술대상 무대가 그동 안의 갈증을 말끔히 해소해준 느낌이었어요. ‘아, 내가 옳은 길을 가고 있구나’ 하는 확신이 생겼 고, ‘다음에는 꼭 후보자로, 또 시상자로 이 자리에 다시 오고 싶다’는 다짐도 더 단단해졌습니다.

Did you set any goals for yourself for 2025, and if so, have you accomplished them yet?

2025년 목표를 세웠나요? 있다면 이미 달성했나요?

I consider having my song featured as a special stage at the Baeksang Awards in May a major accomplishment, and my goal is to continue my music activities without pause. Later this year, I plan to release a new single album.

5월 백상예술대상에서 제 노래가 특별무대로 소개된 것을 큰 성취라고 생각하고, 제 목표는 쉬지 않고 음악 활동을 이어가는 것입니다. 꾸준히 이 목표를 이루어가고 있다고 느껴요. 올해 하반기 에는 새로운 싱글 앨범도 발매할 예정입니다.

What are your long-term career goals? How would you like people to think about Lee Aram’s music years from now?

장기적인 커리어 목표는 무엇인가요? 앞으로 사람들이 이아람의 음악을 어떻게 생각했으면 하나요?

I always write my lyrics based on what I’ve personally experienced and thought. To me, singing is about telling my own story, so it has always felt natural to write my songs myself. Maybe that’s why many people say they find my lyrics relatable. Moving forward, I’ll continue to put my experiences, thoughts, and the messages I want to leave behind into my music. My dream as an artist is that one day, when people listen through all of my albums, it will feel like they’re reading the autobiography of Lee Aram.

저는 항상 직접 경험하고 직접 생각한 것들을 바탕으로 가사를 씁니다. 노래는 결국 제 이야기를 전하는 것이고, 그렇기 때문에 제가 직접 쓰는 것이 당연하다고 생각해왔어요. 그래서인지 많은 분들이 제 가사에 공감된다고 말씀해주시더라고요. 앞으로도 제가 겪은 일들, 느낀 생각들, 그리 고 세상에 남기고 싶은 메시지를 음악과 가사로 담아낼 겁니다. 언젠가 제 앨범들을 쭉 들어본다 면, 이아람이라는 사람의 자서전을 읽는 듯한 느낌을 받게 되는 것이 제 아티스트로서의 꿈이자 바람입니다.

마지막으로, 자신이나 음악에 대해 더 하고 싶은 말씀이 있나요?

I will continue to sing stories and music filled with my own colors. Even if you occasionally forget about it, I hope my music comes to mind once in a while and becomes a subtle background soundtrack to moments in your life. I hope you continue to listen to and enjoy it. Thank you.
