Kyung Dasom’s Powerful Music
Kyung Dasom opens up about the intense emotions behind her songs, how fans motivate her to keep going, and more.
For those who have never heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence, “Kyung Dasom is ___” or “Kyung Dasom’s music is ___”?
Kyung Dasom is a musician and vocal trainer. Kyung Dasom’s music is a part of my life.
Do you remember when you first realized you wanted to become a singer? Was this always your career goal, or did you have a different dream job previously?
When I was younger, I did dream of becoming a singer. I was just a little girl who was happiest when singing. In high school, I met some amazing teachers who inspired me to become someone who could teach others to sing, so after graduating college, I began my career as a vocal trainer. I kept composing as I taught, and at some moment, I started to feel like I wanted to tell my own story through music and began promoting as a singer-songwriter as well as a trainer.
What is your new song, “I’m Sorry Mother,” about? What inspired it?
This song is dedicated to my parents, who have made it possible for me to continue forward towards my dreams all this time. I have worked and continue to work hard in order to achieve my goals, but they have never once pressured me to become an “amazing” or “successful” person. Instead, they’ve always told me that “If you’re happy, that’s enough.” These words are the greatest encouragement that could exist for me in this world. The song also contains a small amount of the apologetic feelings I hold towards my parents.
What are some of your go-to sources of inspiration for music?
My daily life, dramas, movies… I’m a person with a high level of concentration! Lol
How has your music changed since debut? How have you changed as a musician?
After debuting, my music has begun to overflow with the emotions I personally feel. Greed towards achieving my dream, the desire to love, painful scars - and occasionally, just whatever the heck I want! Lol
What do you see as your biggest musical strengths and weaknesses?
Musically, my strengths and weaknesses are very similar. To give one example, my tendency to be too dedicated to a situation. I think this manifests as both a strength and a downfall, because even after time passes, the emotions I felt while writing a song come back in full force when I hear it again.
Are you planning to release a full-length album someday, or would you prefer to keep releasing singles?
This one… is up to my CEO, lol. I do think it’s likely I’ll be sticking to singles for the time being, though.
For each of these songs, please share some information about it. This can be whatever you want: a fun fact about the making of the song, the inspiration for the song, a general description of the song, anything!
“Fall in Love”: This song talks about the butterfly-esque emotions one feels in the beginning stages of love. While the comfortable flutters you get from a long-term relationship are also nice, there’s really nothing like the constant butterflies you experience during a newly-blossoming love.
“My Love Song”: This one’s also about new love. It’s about how your heart flutters so much that everything around you seems to have a melody! I actually wrote this song while watching the Korean drama Fight For My Way, but if I’m being honest, these days I don’t feel the emotions as vividly as I did when I first composed it. The reason for that is there is no Park Seo-joon near me to inspire my life.
“MY WAY”: This is the first song I wrote after moving to my current company. My CEO told me to try writing something that I really wanted to, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t make something satisfactory. I got so mad that I ended up screaming, “Gah, I don’t know! I’m gonna do it my way!” The song itself is bright and upbeat, but I think I was pretty fed up with myself when I actually wrote it, haha.
“CARE”: The work I’ve chosen for myself encompasses many different things. At this time, both my mind and body were worn down, and this song contains the words I wished someone would have used to comfort me. It’s okay not to do well; moving a bit slowly is fine, too! You’re doing great as it is! This is something I want to say to anyone who is reading this right now, too! You are enough!
What has the feedback been like for your music over the years? Is there a particular reaction people have that you hope to see the most?
I’ve received a lot of love. There are people who have told me that they’ve received comfort, and others who tell me that my music improves their mood. Each and every piece of encouragement means the world to me.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten, either about music or something else?
I received a DM from someone who has been going through a rough patch in their life. They told me that after listening to “CARE,” they received the strength they needed to start a new chapter in their life. It was a message filled with raw emotions, and I cried thankful tears for a long while after reading it. I guess it wasn’t technically advice, but at the time, I was extremely tired and wondering how long I could keep this up, or if it was even possible for me to continue releasing albums. This message gave me strength to make the decision of continuing forward without stopping.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to sing professionally?
You MUST practice basic vocal exercises. Your vocal chords won’t survive otherwise.
What is next for you? Are there any future releases you are already preparing or coming up with ideas for?
I’m working hard! Ah… So tired…
Lastly, is there anything else you would like to say about your music?
My music contains my heart. Thank you for listening to my heart, and I hope you’ll continue this journey with me in the future as well! Thank you!
