For those who have never heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence, “kursor is ____” or “kursor’s music is ___”?

계속해서 자신만의 시그니처 스타일로 음악을 발표할 계획인가요, 아니면 앞으로 다양한 장르와 스타일을 탐색할 계획인가요?

Do you plan to continue releasing music in your signature style, or do you plan to explore different genres and styles in the future?

딱히 장르를 정해두고 음악을 만드는 편은 아니고 항상 지금 감정에 솔직하려고 노력하는 편이에요. 꾸밈없이 지금의 감정, 기분을 음악으로 표현하려고 하는데 기분 좋을 때보단 뭔가 조금 우울하고 공허한 마음이 들 때 더 많은 아이디어를 떠올라요. 그래서 지금 까지는 다소 차가운 무드의 음악들이 나왔던거 같아요. 장르 상관없이 제 솔직한 마음과 생각을 전달할수 있는 음악을 만드는게 우선입니다.

I'm not the type to make music in a specific genre, but I'm always trying to be honest with my feelings. I try to express my current emotions through music without embellishment, but I come up with more ideas when I feel a little depressed and empty than when I am in a good mood, so I think [my] music has a rather cold mood so far. Regardless of genre, making music that can convey my honest thoughts is my priority.

예명인 kursor를 선택한 이유는 무엇인가요?

Why did you choose the stage name kursor?

[Cursor]라는 것이 화면상에서 내가 무엇을 보고 싶은지 또는 무엇을 듣고 싶은지 가리키고 있는 포인터잖아요? 여러분이 편하게 쉴 수 있는 음악들 속에서 가리키고 있는 지점이 저였으면 좋겠다는 의미로 지었어요.

A cursor is a pointer that points to what I want to see or hear on the screen, and I want to be the point in the music where you can relax.

새 싱글 "Sorrow"는 무엇에 관한 것입니까?

What is your new single, "Sorrow," about?

누구나 한번쯤은 겪는 현실 이별에 대해서 이야기 하고싶었어요. 거창한 이유가 아닌 서로간의 자연스럽게 마음이 떠났을때 그 감정을 이야기를 풀어내보고 싶었습니다. 더이상 미래가 보이지 않는 서로를 위해 그만하자는 의미로 “서로(sorrow)”라고 지었습니다.

I wanted to talk about the breakup that everyone experiences at least once. I wanted to tell the story of how we felt when our hearts left each other naturally, not for grandiose reasons. [I] named it “Sorrow” to mean that we should stop for the sake of each other, [because we] can no longer see [a] future [together].

"매듭"

“Knot”

“매듭” 제가 처음으로 만든 솔로곡입니다. 그래서 애착이 많이 가요. 그때 당시에 제 감정이 고스란히 담긴 곡입니다. 그래서 잘 듣지 않아요 그때 힘들었던 감정들이 떠올라서. 근데 아이러니 하게 제 곡들중에서 많은분들이 가장 좋아해주시는 곡입니다.  

“Knot” is my first solo song, so there's a lot of love [for it]. It is a song that contains my emotions from that time. I don't listen very [often to it,] because I remember the hard feelings back then, but ironically, it is one of my songs that people like the most. 

"나비"

같은 장소, 같은 시간 속에서 서로 다른 생각을 가지고 있는 사람들의 이야기를 그려보고 싶었어요. 아무렇지 않은 듯 마주보며 이야기를 나누고 있지만 한쪽은 이별을 생각하며 애써 감추려 연기하고 있고 다른 한 사람은 사실 그 마음을 알고 있으면서 모르는 척 연기하는 그런 모습을 풀어내 보고 싶었습니다. 그리고 이별이라는 단어가 나에게는 ＂끝＂이라는 의미가 될 수도 있지만 다른 누군가에겐 새로운 ＂시작＂이라는 의미도 될수 있으니까요.

I wanted to tell a story of people with different ideas in the same place at the same time. We are talking face to face as if nothing is wrong, but one side is hiding thoughts of parting, and the other person knows the other one’s feelings and pretends not to know. The word “farewell” can mean “the end” to me, but it can also mean a new “beginning” to someone else.

"파도"

“WAVE”

제 곡 중에서 유일하게 피아노와 제 목소리로만 채운 곡인데요. 진부한 사랑고백이 아닌 은유적으로 제 마음이 느껴질수 있게 가사를 쓰려고 노력을 했어요. 나의 바다가 되버린 그대를 향해 움직이는 제 마음을 “WAVE”로 비유한 곡입니다.

It is the only song I have filled with piano and my voice. I tried to write the lyrics so that my heart could be felt metaphorically rather than as a banal confession of love. This song compares my heart moving toward someone, who has become my sea, to a “WAVE.”

"완벽해”

“Perfect” 

사실 “완벽해”는 훨씬 예전에 만들었던 곡이에요. “WAVE”보다 훨씬 전이요. 이런저런 사정으로 앨범을 내지 못하고 있다가 다시 시작 해보자라는 마음으로 다시 편곡하고 수정해서 발표한 곡이라 뭔가 제가 다시 시작할수 있는 용기를 준 곡 입니다.

“Perfect” is actually a song I made a long time ago, long before “WAVE.” It was a song that gave me the courage to start over, because I was unable to release an album for various reasons, but I rearranged and revised it with the intention of starting over.

MONIKA와의 작업은 어땠나요? 그 협업은 어떻게 이루어졌나요?

What was it like to work with MONIKA? How did that collaboration come about?

모니카는 예전 부터 알던 같이 음악하던 동료에요. 모니카가 새 앨범을 작업하던중에 제 목소리가 들어가면 좋을것 같다고 연락이 왔어요. 능력있고 항상 음악에 열정이 넘치는 친구라서 그래서 흔쾌히 알겠다고 하고 같이 작업하게 되었어요. 

MONIKA is a music colleague I've known for a long time. She contacted me while she was working on her new album and said she would like my voice in [it]. She's a good friend and always passionate about music, so I’m happy to know and work with her.

당신의 노래 커버 중 어떤 것이 가장 자랑스럽고 어떤 노래를 커버할지 어떻게 결정합니까?

Which of your song covers are you the most proud of, and how do you decide which songs to cover?

개인적으로 제가 어렸을때 듣고 영감을 받았던 곡들을 제 방식대로 리메이크한 커버시리즈가 있는데 그곡들이 가장 애착이 가요. 어렸을때 너무 좋아서 마냥 듣기만 했던 곡들을 제가 다시 재해석하고 부르려고 하니까 감회가 새롭더라구요. 단지 유행따라가는 음악이 아닌 제 추억들이 담긴 음악들이어서  가장 재밌게 작업했습니다.

I have a cover series that remakes songs that I listened to as a child and inspired me in [personal] way[s], and those songs are the ones I am the most attached to. As I try to reinterpret and sing songs that I loved to listen to when I was young, the feeling is new. It's not just trendy music, it's music that contains my memories, so I have the most fun working on it.

앞으로 어떤 노래를 구체적으로 다루고 싶나요?

What specific songs would you like to cover in the future?

The Weeknd 를 굉장히 좋아하는데요. The Weeknd 곡들을 몇개 더 제 스타일에 맞게 바꿔서 해보려고 합니다.

I really like The Weeknd. I'm going to try changing a few more The Weeknd songs to fit my style.

YouTube 또는 SoundCloud에서 노래 커버를 발표하는 것을 선호합니까? 어떤 사이트를 사용하는 것을 선호합니까? 

Do you prefer releasing song covers on YouTube or SoundCloud? Which site do you prefer using?

둘다 동시에 하는 편인데, 아무래도 유튜브 쪽에 집중을 하고 있는중이라 유튜브를 더 선호하는것 같아요. 동영상도 같이 올릴수 있으니깐요.

I tend to do both at the same time, but I think I prefer YouTube because I am concentrating on YouTube [more, and] you can upload videos.

곡을 만드는 과정에서 전통이나 루틴이 있나요?

Do you have any traditions or routine when it comes to your song-making process? 

항상 솔직하려고 노력하는 편이에요. 그래서 가사에 조금더 집중하는편이고 아무리 좋은 트랙과 멜로디를 만들어도 가사가 한글자라도 마음에 들지 않으면 누구에게도 들려주지 않는 편입니다.

I always try to be honest. I tend to focus a little more on the lyrics, and no matter how good the tracks and melodies I make are, I tend to not [share them with] anyone if I don't like the lyrics, even in Korean.

좋은 뮤직비디오를 만들기 위해 필요한 것은 무엇일까요? 뮤직 비디오에 어떤 특성이 있는지 확인하려고 합니까?

What are some things that are needed to make a good music video? What traits do you try to make sure your music videos have?

뮤비디렉터와의 교감이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 아무리 영상미가 좋아도 제 음악과 어울리지 않으면 아무 소용없으니까요. 제가 출연하지도 않아도 제 음악을 잘 이해하고 제 음악이 녹아들수 있는 영상미를 가진 뮤직비디오면 저는 그게 먼저라고 생각해요.

I think the most important thing is to communicate with the music video director. No matter how good the visuals are, if they don't match my music, it's of no use. Even if I'm not appearing, I think that if it's a music video with visual beauty that can understand my music well, that comes first.

귀하의 단기 및 장기 경력 목표는 무엇입니까?

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

제가 이런저런 사정으로 앨범을 자주 내지 못했었는데요. 올해는 정말 많이 앨범을 내려고 해요. 저의 감정 제 생각들을 가김없이 더 많이 보여드리고 들려드리는게 제 목표입니다.

I haven't been able to release albums often for various reasons. I'm planning to release a lot of albums this year. My goal is to show more of my feelings and thoughts without fail.

마지막으로 음악에 대해 하고 싶은 말이 있다면?

Lastly, is there anything else you’d like to say about your music?

kursor의 음악은 그냥 저 자체에요. 그래서 항상 더 솔직하려고 노력해요. 저는 사실 누구에게 저의 진짜 이야기를 하는것을 좋아하지 않아요. 그 해소를 음악으로 표현 하는거 같아요. 제 이야기를 그만하고싶어질때 까지는  계속 음악을 통해 저희 생각 감정을 일기장처럼 써갈 생각입니다. 감사합니다.

kursor's music is just me, so I always try to be honest. I don't really like to tell anyone my real story. I think that resolution is expressed through music. Until I want to stop telling my story, I plan to keep writing [my] thoughts and feelings like a diary through music. Thank you.
