KIMDOAH on “Dream Walking,” Going Solo, and Showing Multitudes
KIMDOAH talks about the pros and cons of promoting outside of a group, what she learned while on reality television, and more.
For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them?
I would like to express myself as a red cherry, which symbolizes bouncy charm, cuteness, and strong feelings. My music is based on my cheerful and lovely voice, but my dance performances are very cool and powerful. I hope you enjoy and love [my] music and performances.
Did any specific person or experience inspire you to become a musician?
I watch a lot of overseas pop artists' performances and study stage mannerisms. I often watch Beyoncé’s, Ariana Grande’s, and Lizzo's performances! It's still far from the musical style I'm currently doing, but I learn a lot about how artists express and communicate with the public on stage and get inspired. I especially get comfort and inspiration from confident lyrics.
Please describe your new single, “Dream Walking”!
My first digital single, “Dream Walking,” is a bright and sparky style of dance music, and [my] refreshing voice is attractive on top of the rich bass and colorful pluck sound. The performance of the song is so cool and catchy. I hope you love and enjoy it.
Can you share a “TMI” story from making the “DREAM WALKING” music video?
It was [my] first time [shooting in] mostly outdoor locations, and I received great healing from the beautiful views and great weather. Also, a chubby, cute, lovely cat was flirting with me! I took lots of pictures with it.
Is “Dream Walking” a good example of what you want future releases to sound like, or will future singles sound very different?
It's going to be similar but more exciting. I like the lively and lovely mood I have now, so I want to maintain it, but for my next album, which will come soon, I want to show more sides [of myself].
What lessons did you learn or what skills did you improve through your experiences on reality shows?
I tried to [improve] on the things that I was disappointed about while working [in] a team. I tried to create [a prettier] tone by using multiple techniques to find more of my vocal colors, and I did a lot of lower body exercises to balance [my] core to improve my performances.
Would you ever consider joining a group again, or would you prefer to stay a solo artist now?
At this moment, I want to focus on promoting [my] solo album.
Has anything surprised you about what it’s like to promote music solo instead of in a group?
When I worked in a team, I had a lot of things to prepare, but I felt a little less pressure on the stage. Solo, I can focus on myself completely, but there are a lot of things to care about [while] on the stage, so I think both [performing solo and in a team] have big pros and cons.
What are your long-term and short-term career goals?
In the long term, I would like to have enough energy and good songs to hold a solo concert, and in the short term, I'm thinking about how to show different, varied sides of me that the fans will love.
Where can people follow you on social media to stay updated on your new releases?
You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube.
Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?
I'm still lacking a lot and not good enough, and I'm very nervous because [“Dream Walking” is] my first solo [release], but I really like the stage, and I think my biggest strength is [feeling] grateful to the fans! Thank you so much to those who support me, and I hope you give me a lot of strength to continue to work in various fields.
