The singer and rapper talks about his new music and desire to keep changing things up. 가수이자 래퍼인 그는 자신의 새로운 음악과 끊임없이 변화를 추구하고자 하는 열망에 대해 이야기합니다.

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “JUN0 is ___” or “JUN0’s music is ___”?

당신의 음악을 아직 들어보지 못한 사람들에게 어떻게 설명해 주시겠어요? "JUN0는 ___입니다" 또는 "JUN0의 음악은 ___입니다"라는 문장을 어떻게 마무리해 주시겠어요?

I’d like to describe JUN0’s music as a bouncing ball. You never know where it will land, but there’s always a sense of flow and energy within it.

JUN0의 음악은 튀는 공이다 라고 표현하고 싶어요. 어디로 튈지 모르지만 그 안에 흐름과 에너지가 있다는 뜻이에요.

What is the story behind how you decided to pursue a music career?

어떤 계기로 음악 경력을 쌓기로 결심하셨나요?

It was around the age of 22, after I moved to Seoul, [when] I felt the need to pursue music “properly.” At first, I mainly worked on just rapping, but one day, while creating music with my team members and friends, I tried “singing rap” for the first time. It felt so fresh and fun, and it was the first time I felt like my emotions were naturally flowing out. My musical style and direction changed completely, and that became the starting point for the JUN0 you see today.

음악을 ‘제대로’ 해봐야겠다고 느낀 건 스물두 살쯤, 서울에 올라온 이후였어요. 처음엔 혼자 랩 위주로 작업을 했었는데, 어느 날 팀 형, 친구랑 같이 음악을 만들다가 처음 으로 ‘싱잉랩’을 해보게 됐어요. 그게 너무 새롭고 재밌었고, 동시에 제 안의 어떤 감정들이 처음으로 자연스럽게 흘러나오 는 느낌이 들었어요. 그 순간 이후로 제 음악 스타일이나 방향성이 확 바뀌었고, 그게 지금의 JUN0를 만든 시작 점이었죠.

Why did you decide to go by “JUN0”?

왜 "JUN0"이라는 이름을 사용하기로 했나요?

It’s partly taken from my real name, and I included the number “0” because I wanted to convey the feeling of starting something new. So instead of using the letter “O,” I used the number “0.”

그냥 제 본명에서 따온거기도 하고, 숫자 ‘0’을 넣은 건 이제 무언가를 시작하는 느낌을 주고 싶어서 영어 o 말고 숫자 0을 써 서 만들었던거 같아요.

What are the three biggest influences on your music?

당신의 음악에 가장 큰 영향을 준 세 가지는 무엇인가요?

First, feelings and moods are the biggest motivations. Whether it’s the lyrics or the melody, it all begins with the emotion of that day. The second [source of inspiration] is sound itself. More than [one] genre, I value the texture and rhythm of sounds. Sometimes just one synth or one kick can define the entire mood. The third [source of inspiration] is imagination. Rather than starting with real-life situations, I often start with the question, “What if there were such emotions?” I often make songs based on imagined stories, and sometimes those imagined feelings feel even more real.

첫 번째는 감정의 흐름이에요. 기분이나 분위기 같은 감정적인 결이 음악을 시작하는 가장 큰 동기가 돼요. 가사든 멜로디든 결국 그 날의 감정에서 출발하더라고요. 두 번째는 사운드 자체예요. 장르보다 소리의 질감이나 리듬감이 더 중요하게 느껴져요. 신스 하나, 킥 하나만으로도 무드가 정해지는 경우가 많거든요. 세 번째는 상상이에요. 실제 상황보다 ‘이런 감정이 있다면?’이라는 가정에서 시작하는 경우가 많아서, 상상 속 이 야기로 곡을 만드는 일이 잦아요. 그래서 가끔은 실제보다 더 진짜 같은 감정이 나오는 것 같아요.

What musicians do you look up to the most, and why?

당신이 가장 존경하는 음악가는 누구이며, 그 이유는 무엇입니까?

[From] Korea, I really respect pH-1. His music blends emotions, hip-hop, and R&B so naturally. I particularly admire how he conveys deep feelings through his lyrics without making them too heavy. I love that kind of freedom in his style, and I’ve learned a lot from it. [From North America], Justin Bieber has had the biggest influence on me. His music always sounds fresh, and I think he’s especially good at conveying emotion through his vocals. I respect how he started at such a young age and has continued to grow to this day, and I hope to keep evolving in my music like he does.

한국에서는 pH-1을 정말 존경해요. 그의 음악은 감성, 힙합, R&B를 자연스럽게 섞어요. 특히 가사에 진중한 감정을 담으면서도 너무 무겁지 않게 풀어내는 방식이 좋아요. 그런 자유로운 스타일이 좋고, 그에게서 많은 것을 배우고 있어요. 북미에서는 저스틴 비버가 가장 큰 영향을 줬어요. 그의 음악은 항상 신선하고, 특히 그의 보컬은 감정을 표현하는 데 탁월하다고 생각해요. 어린 나이에 시작해서 꾸준히 성장해 온 그의 모습을 정말 존경하고, 끊임없이 변화하면서 그의 음악을 만들고 싶어요.

What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a musician?

음악가로서 당신의 가장 큰 강점과 약점은 무엇입니까?

My strength is my ability to naturally blend different styles. I can both sing and rap, and I’m always trying new things, rather than sticking to just one genre. I think that’s why I can offer listeners a different mood each time. On the other hand, my weakness is that it takes me a long time to feel satisfied with my work. I’m not a perfectionist, but I do spend a lot of time worrying about even the smallest details, so it takes a while for me to finish a song. Still, I think I’m building a strong standard for quality because of that.

강점은 다양한 스타일을 자연스럽게 소화할 수 있다는 점이에요. 노래와 랩을 모두 할 수 있고, 장르적으로도 한 가지에 머무르지 않고 계속 새로운 걸 시도 하려고 해요. 그래서 듣는 사람들에게도 매번 다른 무드를 줄 수 있는 게 제 장점이라고 생각해요. 반대로 약점은 스스로를 만족시키는 데 시간이 오래 걸린다는 점이에요. 완벽주의까진 아니지만, 작은 디테일 하나에도 오래 고민하다 보니까 곡을 마무리하는 데 시간이 걸리는 편이에요. 그래도 그만큼 퀄리티에 대한 기준은 확실히 세워가고 있다고 생각해요.

Please describe Beginning and what the cover art represents.

싱글 Beginning에 대해 설명해 주시고, 앨범 커버 아트가 무엇을 나타내는지 설명해 주세요.

Beginning is a double single that was released ahead of [[WDYL (What Do You Like?)]]. As the name suggests, it’s meant to announce the beginning of this project. Instead of feeling polished and refined, it’s filled with raw emotions and the struggles I faced before finding my direction. The blue lines in the cover art represent the feeling of reaching out with strong energy, even if it’s not perfect yet. The cover of [WDYL (What Do You Like?)] is completely different. For the first time, I put my own photo front and center. Since it’s my first EP, I wanted to show more of myself, and I chose a shot that captured the most dynamic moment [from] the cover photoshoot. With the title’s question, “What Do You Like?,” it really feels like I’m introducing the current version of JUN0, and that makes it even more special to me.

[Beginning]은 EP에 앞서 선공개 형식으로 먼저 낸 더블 싱글이에요. 그래서 제목 그대로, 이번 EP의 시작을 알리는 작업이라는 의미에서 ‘Beginning’이라고 이름 붙였어요. 정리되고 다듬어진 느낌보다는, 좀 더 날것의 감정과 방향성을 찾기 전의 고민들이 담겨 있 어요. 커버 아트에 담긴 파란색 선들이 퍼져 나가는 이미지도, 불완전하지만 강한 에너지를 안고 뻗어 나가려는 느낌을 표현한 거고요. 그리고 이번 EP *[WDYL (What Do You Like?)]*의 커버는 완전히 다르게, 처음으로 제 사진을 전면에 내세운 커버예요. 첫 EP인 만큼, 제 자신을 더 드러내고 싶었고, 새롭게 촬영한 프로필 중에서 가장 역동적인 순간을 담은 사진으로 커버를 구성했어요. 질문을 던지는 타이틀 “What Do You Like?”와 함께, 이게 지금의 JUN0다—라고 소개하는 느낌이 들어서 더 애착이 가요.

Please describe some of the songs on your new EP: fun facts, behind-the-scenes stories, descriptions of them… whatever you want to share!

새 EP에 수록된 노래 중 몇 곡을 설명해 주세요. 재밌는 사실, 비하인드 스토리, 노래에 대한 설명 등, 공유하고 싶은 게 무엇이든 말씀해주세요!

“Favorite Time”: This is one of the double title tracks of the EP, and it’s about the lingering regrets [from] a past love. Even after breaking up, you can’t stop thinking about that person, and no matter how much time passes, some part of those feelings always remains. This song says that every time those memories come back, it feels like that was the best time. The line “I’m on the right track” keeps repeating, almost like [I’m] trying to convince myself, and I especially like how tender and bittersweet that part feels.

“내가 가장 좋아했던 시간은, 너였어” : 이 곡은 EP의 더블 타이틀 중 하나인데, 지나간 사랑에 대한 아쉬움이 담겨 있어요. 헤어진 후에도 계속 그 사람 생각이 나고, 아무리 시간이 지나도 마음 한켠에 남아 있는 감 정이 있잖아요. 그 기억이 떠오를 때마다, 그때가 내 인생에서 가장 좋았던 시간이었다고 말하는 곡이에요. ‘I’m on the right track’이라는 가사는 마치 자기 자신을 설득하려는 것처럼 반복되는데, 그 안에 담긴 감정이 은근히 애틋해서 저는 그 부분이 특히 마음에 들어요.

“Slowly” (ft. Jaejun): This song is closer to what I want to say to myself than to someone else. This song was made for the kind of moment when everything gets so busy and exhausting [that] you just have to tell yourself it’s okay to slow down. I didn’t want it to be about overwhelming emotions; I wanted it to feel like quiet comfort, so the lyrics are very calm, with lots of space. I just wanted to say, “It’s okay to be as you are right now.”

“느리게 흘러갔으면” : 해 이 곡은 누군가에게 하는 말보다는, 제 자신에게 해주는 말에 가까워요. 뭔가 정신없이 바쁘고 지치는 시기엔, 그냥 좀 느려도 괜찮다고 스스로를 다독여야 할 때가 있잖아요. 딱 그런 순간에 만든 곡이에요. 크게 벅차오르는 감정보다는, 조용히 옆에 앉아주는 위로 같은 느낌을 주고 싶었고, 그래서 가사도 되게 담담하고, 여백이 많아요. 그냥 ‘지금 이대로도 괜찮아’라는 말을 해주고 싶었어요.

“Wanna Be Your Last”: This song is about wanting to be the last person someone loves. I didn’t try to make it all pretty; I honestly included slightly clumsy and anxious feelings, too. The mood is dreamy, but there’s also a bit of energy in the rhythm, so the emotions and tension kind of ride along together. I shot the music video for this song myself in Fukuoka. It was October, but it was so hot - probably around 30 degrees Celsius [86 degrees Fahrenheit]. We carried the camera around and walked nearly 70 kilometers in four days. It was physically exhausting, but I feel so attached to this song that I hope you’ll watch the video too. It will [make the song] feel even more special.

“마지막이 되고 싶어” : 사랑하는 사람의 마지막이 되고 싶은 마음을 담은 곡이에요. 예쁘게 포장하려고 하기보다는, 약간은 서툴고 불안한 감정까지 솔직하게 담았어요. 무드 자체는 몽환적인데, 리듬은 살짝 에너지가 있어서 감정이랑 텐션이 같이 가는 느낌이 에요. 이 곡은 후쿠오카에서 직접 뮤직비디오도 찍었는데요, 10월이었는데도 날씨가 거의 한여름처럼 덥더라고요. 30도쯤 됐던 것 같아요. 그 더운 날씨에 카메라 들고 이곳저곳 돌아다니다가, 4일 동안 거의 70km를 걸었어요. 진짜 체력적으로는 힘들었는데, 그만큼 애착이 큰 곡이라서 뮤비까지 함께 봐주시면 더 특 별하게 느껴지실 것 같아요.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

당신의 단기 및 장기 직업 목표는 무엇입니까?

For now, I just want more people to hear the name “JUN0” and my music. That’s my short-term goal: to reach as many listeners as possible. I think I showed a lot of different styles through this EP, and I want to keep coming back with something so people think, “This guy’s always doing something different.” In the long run, I want to be remembered as an artist with a unique atmosphere. It would be amazing to hear people say there’s a distinct tone, mood, and emotion that only [my] music has. Rather than fitting into any one genre, I hope “JUN0” itself feels like a genre, and that will naturally lead to expanding my work internationally.

지금은 일단 더 많은 사람들이 JUN0라는 이름과 음악을 들어봐줬으면 좋겠어요. 그게 제일 먼저 이루고 싶은 단기 목표예요. 이번 EP를 통해 다양한 스타일을 보여드렸다고 생각하는데, 앞으로도 계속 다른 색깔로 찾아가면서 “얘는 뭔가 매번 다르다”는 인상을 주고 싶어요. 장기적으로는 저만의 분위기를 가진 아티스트로 기억되고 싶어요. 음악만의 결, 무드, 감정선이 있다는 얘기를 듣는 게 제일 멋질 것 같아요. 장르를 딱 나누기보단, JUN0라는 이름이 하나의 장르처럼 느껴졌으면 좋겠고, 그걸 기반으로 해외 활동까지 자연스럽게 이어지는 게 목표예요.

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?

마지막으로, 자신이나 음악에 대해 더 전하고 싶은 말이 있나요?

This EP is a more honest and colorful expression of myself compared to what I’ve done before. It feels like I’m gathering everything I’ve built up slowly through singles and finally sharing it all together, so I feel attached to it. Going forward, I want to keep trying new things and be the kind of artist who makes people say, “Wow, JUN0 can do this kind of music, too.” If there are people out there who like what I do, I’ll keep going even further with their support.
