Haven on the Power of Music and Her Stellar New Single
Rising star Haven describes the meaning of “Future Somebody” and the ways music heals.
For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them? How would you finish the sentence “Haven is ___” or “Haven’s music is ___”?
I would describe my music like an open diary. Each song has its way of telling a story and a perspective that I have experienced. “Haven’s music is a storybook with tunes.”
Do you remember when you first decided to pursue a music career? Did any specific person or event inspire you to start singing?
Ever since I can remember, all I wanted to do was perform. I loved singing and dancing and would take any opportunity to showcase it. My mom even had a lot of clips of me performing as a child. I just knew I wanted to become an artist. The turning point that pushed me to pursue it was when I was thirteen. I got diagnosed with depression and would always turn to music for comfort. Music saved my life.
Please describe your new single, “Future Somebody,” and what inspired the music video’s concept.
“Future Somebody” was written to be empowering. [It initially] was a song to express my desire for a future lover. As time went on, I realized that I wanted to become a better version of myself and that it's okay that I don't have a partner. I was going to become my [own] “future somebody,” and I was excited to see [how] I would grow and change as a person. With the guidance of Jasper, the director, [the video portrays] a realistic relationship that many have experienced. In the pursuit of finding “the one,” I was forgetting to love myself, and it was an attempt at breaking out of the cycle and redirecting my focus [back] on my own future. The music video brought that vision to life.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about the making of “Future Somebody” or its music video?
The song was a completely different concept when it was first produced. It was meant to be a song about wanting a “future somebody,” but a few months after the demo was made, I went back into the studio with my good friend and producer, z from brb, with a whole new perspective, and the song was completely changed.
There are some interesting details in the “Future Somebody” music video, like the red strings and black flower. Do these details represent specific things, or do you prefer for the symbolism to stay up to the viewer’s interpretation?
They do represent specific things. For example, the red string [is] a reference to the movie Your Name, which represents the connection that brings two people together and how fate has a way of intertwining their souls. However, I [want] to hear the interpretations of my viewers, because this song has a lot of meaning to me, and I want to hear what kinds of meaning it has for others.
Please share some fun facts about some of your songs!
A fun fact about “Meant 2 Be”: it was meant to be a sequel for my single “Love Again.” A fun fact about my debut single, “Piece of Paper”: it was recorded at the staircase of [the college] Republic Polytechnic. I loved the acoustics, more specifically the echo.
What is next for you?
I won’t say much, but my listeners should stay tuned, as I have more exciting projects in the works.
What are your long-term career goals?
My main career goals [are] to expand my identity as an artist and create more music that resonates with like-minded people. Going on a world tour would also be a dream come true, and I also hope to release many albums.
Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about your music?
I'm just getting started, and I hope you guys can come along with me on this journey.
