GYE0M: “I dedicate my songs to everyone going through difficult times”

For those who have not heard your music before, how would you describe it to them?

My music is a desperate diary of my life. It has always been difficult for me to let go of the things I [have] gained and lost. I want to at least preserve memories and moments of meeting and parting through music. The act of recording and watching recordings turn into melodies and meanings [has become] a source of hope in my life. These days, I often find myself wishing that the hope I [have] found through music [can] be passed on to my listeners.

제 음악은 제 삶의 처절한 일기입니다. 삶에서 얻고 잃는 것들, 만나고 헤어지는 순간들을 스쳐 보내는 것이 어려웠고, 그 순간들과 기억들을 음악으로라도 기록하고 싶었습니다. 그렇게 기록하고, 기록한 것들이 멜로디와 의미를 가지게 되는 일이 제 삶의 희망이었습니다. 요즘은 제가 음악으로 가질 수 있었던 희망이 청자들에게도 전해졌으면 좋겠다는 생각을 자주 합니다.

How have your music tastes changed over the years and influenced your own songs?

My music taste has remained quite consistent over the years. I’m drawn to quiet and deep sounds - raw voices, [saturated] reverb, and dreamy atmospheres that blur the line between reality and dreams. I believe the reason I create the kind of music I do today is because of my long-standing love for that style.

Who or what first inspired you to pursue a music career?

Everyone who has passed through my life has left a mark on my music, and that remains true to this day. Thinking back to when I first started, I remember playing guitar for the first time as a middle school student and performing songs by Kotaro Oshio. That’s where it all began.

음악 경력을 쌓도록 처음 영감을 준 사람 또는 무엇이 있나요?

저를 스쳐간 모든 사람들이 결국 제 음악에 가장 큰 영향을 주었고, 지금도 같습니다. 음악을 처음 시작했던 때를 생각하자면, 중학생 때 처음으로 기타를 치며 'Kotaro Oshio'의 곡들을 연주하던 것이 기억납니다.

What career would you be pursuing today if it could not be music-related?

I think I’d like to run a small business or a cozy space. Creating music and nurturing the things I believe in feel very similar to me. Both are about building something meaningful and living with it.

만약 음악과 관련되지 않았다면, 오늘날 어떤 직업을 추구하고 싶으신가요?

작은 회사나 공간을 운영해 보고 싶습니다. 음악을 만들고 그 음악들을 품고 사는 것과 내가 추구하는 것들을 키워 나가는 것은 참 비슷한 일이라는 생각이 듭니다.

Please describe your newest single, “Endless Dawn”!

“Endless Dawn” is a story about lost connections. It's only when people leave us that we realize how truly precious they are. Whether it's love or friendship, shared memories grow deeper, and unresolved stories linger in a corner of our hearts.

… seems to be the most popular, and why?

My most popular song is “Loved, hoped, lost.” I'm not exactly sure why it resonates with so many people, but perhaps it's because we live in a world that's lacking in love and more and more people are yearning for it.

… is your personal favorite, and why?

I love all of my songs, and I have several personal favorites, but the one that comes to mind right now is “Forgetless.” Even when I was writing it, I felt deeply connected to its lyrics and melody. I think the expressions and words in that song represent me best.

저는 제 모든 곡들을 사랑하고, 특히나 좋아하는 곡들도 여러 개 있지만 지금 생각나는 음악은 'Forgetless'입니다. 이 곡을 썼을 당시에도 이 곡의 가사와 멜로디가 좋았고, 여러 표현과 단어들이 저를 가장 잘 대변하는 노래라고 생각됩니다.

My songs are made from experiences that anyone [can] go through. Still, those memories and events [are] the most painful and profound parts of my world, and I believe they feel the same to listeners. I dedicate my songs to everyone going through difficult times, no matter how ordinary those moments seem.

… 가장 흥미로운 배경 스토리를 가진 노래는 무엇입니까?

제 이야기들은 누구나 겪을 수 있는 일들로 이루어진 노래들입니다. 다만 그 모든 기억들과 사건들이 제 세상에서 가장 아프고 깊은 이야기들이었고, 이 노래를 듣는 이들에게도 같을 것 같습니다. 평범하지만 누구보다 아픈 시기들을 지나고 있는 모든 사람들에게 제 노래들을 바칩니다.

… was the most fun to write or record, and why?

The song that was both the most challenging and most exciting to work on was definitely my debut single, “Afterimage.” Before writing the song, I didn’t know I would ever share my personal stories through music. Once the release date was set and I began producing and recording it, I felt overwhelming excitement. I finished the first recording session in a tiny one-room apartment in just ten hours. When I listened to it the next day, I felt disappointed with the result, so I recorded it again and again until I got a vocal take I was satisfied with. I think that played a big role in shaping the tone that defines me as singer-songwriter “GYE0M.”

… 작곡하거나 녹음하는 데 가장 즐거웠던 곡은 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?

가장 힘들었고 가장 설렜던 곡은 아무래도 제 데뷔곡인 'Afterimage'입니다. 이 곡을 쓰기 전에 저는 제 이야기들로 만든 음악을 사람들에게 꺼내 놓게 될지 몰랐고, 비로소 발매 일자가 잡히고 이 곡을 프로듀싱하고 녹음할 때 큰 설렘을 느꼈습니다. 기억하기로는 그때 제가 단칸방에서 10시간 만에 첫 녹음을 끝낸 후, 다음 날 다시 들어봤습니다. 하지만 그 결과물은 너무 아쉬웠고, 몇 번이고 다시 녹음하며 만족스러운 보컬을 녹음할 수 있었습니다. 아마 그 순간이 싱어송라이터 GYE0M이 추구하는 음색을 만드는 데 큰 영향을 주었던 것 같습니다.

Who do you look up to in the music industry, and why?

Honestly, I find new people to admire all the time and learn from everyone around me. I learn a lot from senior artists, peers, and even younger musicians. But as “GYE0M,” I don’t want to blindly follow or idolize anyone. I want to make my own music, find my own answers, and make my own mistakes.

음악 업계에서 존경하는 사람은 누구이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?

사실 매 순간마다 존경하는 사람들이 생기고, 또 많은 것을 배웁니다. 저보다 먼저 활동을 시작한 선배님들, 동료들, 후배들에게도 많은 것을 배우지만 겸(GYE0M)이라는 뮤지션은 누군가를 맹목적으로 존경하고 따르고 싶지는 않은 것 같습니다. 저는 저만의 음악, 저만의 답, 저만의 실수를 하고 싶습니다.

What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

My current short-term goal is to release music that feels different from what I’ve done before. My musical taste is very firm, and because of that, I sometimes worry that my songs sound too similar. Since I hope to continue releasing music as “GYE0M” for the next ten [years], twenty years, and beyond, I want to make my sound more diverse.

When I started music five years ago, I had big dreams for the long run. But now, my long-term goal is simply to keep releasing music without being forgotten. I think many musicians burn out because they use up too much of themselves too quickly. I’m also pouring myself into my songs moment by moment, but I hope I can continue telling my stories and offering comfort through my music even as I grow older.

당신의 단기 및 장기 커리어 목표는 무엇인가요?

요즘의 단기적인 목표는 이전과 다른 음악을 선보이는 것입니다. 제 취향은 언제나 확고하고, 그로 인해 대중들이 느끼기에는 제 노래들이 모두 비슷하게 느껴질 수도 있겠다는 생각을 합니다. 저는 앞으로도 10년, 20년, 오래오래 GYE0M으로서 음악을 발매하고 싶기 때문에 제 음악을 조금 더 다채롭게 만들고 싶습니다.

5년 전 음악을 시작했을 때의 장기 목표는 여러 거창한 목표들이 있었던 것 같지만, 지금의 장기 목표는 꾸준히 잊히지 않고 발매하는 것입니다. 결국 음악가들의 직업적 수명이 일반적으로 길지 못한 이유는 한순간에 너무 많은 것들을 소진해버리기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 저 또한 매 순간 저를 태워내며 많은 음악을 쓰고 있지만, 나이가 들어서도 꾸준히 제 이야기를 하고, 저만의 위로를 건넬 수 있는 뮤지션이 되고 싶습니다.

Lastly, is there anything else you want to say about yourself or your music?

I hope my music can be a cheer song for someone, a lullaby for another, or a vivid part of someone’s memories. Our pain may never truly end, but I hope we can still find a reason to live through it.

마지막으로, 자신이나 음악에 대해 더 전하고 싶은 말이 있나요?

제 음악이 누군가에게는 응원가이며, 누군가에게는 자장가, 누군가에게는 짙은 추억의 한 부분이길 바랍니다. 우리의 아픔은 결국 끝나지 않겠지만, 그 속에서도 살아낼 의미를 찾아냈으면 좋겠습니다.
