BDC Discuss Musical Influences, Storytelling, and Growth
I had the pleasure of asking BDC about the ways they chart a path all their own.
Note: This was originally published in March 2021. Although I am still releasing new content this week, it is also Archival Week! I am re-uploading interviews from many months ago and releasing curated guides to past episodes, so it’s a great week to subscribe and catch up on episodes and interviews you previously missed!
For those unfamiliar with BDC, how would you describe your music to them? How would you finish the sentence “BDC is ____”?
SIHUN: BDC is discovery itself.
What word or phrase best describes THE INTERSECTION : DISCOVERY?
JUNGHWAN: I think the best word that describes THE INTERSECTION : DISCOVERY is "Upgrade."
How is THE INTERSECTION : DISCOVERY similar to THE INTERSECTION : BELIEF? How are they different?
SEONGJUN: The stories of both albums are in the same parallel universe and also keep showing the image of the moon. And the difference is THE INTERSECTION : DISCOVERY’s title song “MOON RIDER” is more powerful and wilder than THE INTERSECTION : BELIEF’s title song “SHOOT THE MOON,” I think.
Are there any behind-the-scenes stories you can share about the making of this album?
SEONGJUN: Even the day before music video shooting day, the choreography of “MOON RIDER” was a little bit modified. It was hard to adjust to new choreography, but we did our best to make a good music video.
What is the meaning behind the “MOON RIDER” song and music video?
SEONGJUN: They contain the meaning of throwing away all worries and thoughts and being together.
SIHUN: They also [refer to] the three members gathering in the same place after discovering the moon.
Are there any behind-the-scenes stories you have from filming the video for “MOON RIDER”?
JUNGHWAN: To film the music video, we woke up before the sun rose. But when it was over, the sun was rising again. We were actually the “moon riders”!
The “MOON RIDER” music video seems to be a continuation of the “SHOOT THE MOON” music video. Will the same moon imagery be present in future releases too?
SIHUN: The moon is an important factor in BDC's worldview, so I think it'll keep being important. If you are interested in our next album, you'll discover what image of the moon will come out [next].
In what ways do you believe you have grown as artists since your debut?
JUNGHWAN: Compared to the previous album, the genres of the songs in this album have diversified, so I think we are growing into artists who can match various kinds of music.
What are the benefits of being in a K-pop band with only three members?
SIHUN: We can have many individual parts in songs, and there are a lot of opportunities to show each other's charms.
What is it like to be a musician in the time of COVID-19? What has changed regarding your daily schedule and promotional activities?
SEONGJUN: Since COVID-19, promotions through the internet have increased. It is saddest that we have to perform without an audience.
What are your goals for the future of BDC? Are there any upcoming projects you can give hints about?
SIHUN: We want to grow as a great boy band that comes to mind when you think of “B,” like BIGBANG, BTOB, and BTS.
What are your goals for this new album? What impact do you want it to have on listeners?
JUNGHWAN: Since the title of this album is DISCOVERY, I hope many people will discover us, and I would appreciate it if you could enjoy it with us.
SEONGJUN: We want to be a group that gives courage and relief to those who watch our performances and listen to our music.
